"Please connect to the internet"

Post by skechers »

Hi all,

I am a new MJ user and new to the forum as well. I tried searching for my issue prior to posting, but I have not had any luck. If this is redundant, I apologize. I received my MJ about two weeks ago, and it worked great out of the box. When I tried making a call today, I noticed a "Please connect to the internet" message. I have tried working with technical support for over 4 hours now to no avail.

After working with Kate and Victoria, I have tried running the various upgrades, updating to the MAC version, changing my DNS server, unplugging MJ and trying different USB ports. I am running XP SP2 with a Netgear WPN824v2 router. Windows default firewall has been disabled, as well as the AVG antivirus software. Victoria kept telling me that the ports were blocked, but 1) it worked for the first two weeks so I don't understand how they could be blocked, and 2) I verified the ports were open and being forwarded by Netgear.

If anyone can provide insight on how to resolve this, I would greatly appreciate it. Again, I am new to MJ and this forum, so I don't quite know all of the lingo just yet :D

Have you tried to reset your router yet? Netgear router is known to malfunction after running for a few days. Perhaps the router stops opening ports needed by the MagicJack device. Just unplug the Netgear's power supply, wait a few seconds and plug it back.

Thanks for the reply.

I was able to fix my issue. I unplugged MJ and completely powered off my PC and Netgear router. After about 5 minutes, I powered on my PC and the router. Once everthing finished booting, I plugged MJ back into the USB port...and it works again!!!

Thanks for the help :D

I'm glad it works for you. I used to have that same Netgear router that you have. It kept losing DHCP function and would not give IPs to wireless notebooks. I had to power-cycled the router every few days. After a couple weeks, I returned it to the store and got the Linksys router. Linksys router is solid, running for months without needing reboot

answer - setting your firewall to make MJ a trusted app doesn't work
You must set the rules to allow ALL (all ports) outbound TCP and ALL (all ports and in/out) UDP traffic for MJ.
worked for me. using XP SP2 and outpost firewall with router - no changes were made to router.
