Audio distortion and delays - router interference?
When I first got the MJ the sound quality was pretty good although there were clicks, or delays that made the incoming speech rather choppy at times. Then I installed a router to wireless network my new laptop to my desktop computer. Since then, the voice quality has become very garbled, with major distortion that seems to cycle through about half of the time. Do you think the router affected the voice quality by decreasing the signal to the MJ, or is the MJ perhaps just malfunctioning? Also, MJ says not to connect it to a USB hub, only directly into the computer. Does that include a hub that connects to (gets power from) the computer USB port(s) as well as an externally powered hub? Thank you for your help.
An externally powered hub is often required to overcome weak USB power supplies in internal USB interfaces, especially when using a laptop. The warning against external hubs is against external non-powered hubs, which introduce more load on the PC's USB power supply, depriving the MJ even more of the power it craves.
You don't mention what router you put in, so it is not possible to recommend settings adjustments, like MTU or QoS.
You also don't mention what other traffic is going on inside your house (behind your router), nor how much bandwidth, both downstream and upstream, your ISP is promising you and is actually providing to you. MJ requires 80kbps of bandwidth in each direction (64kbps payload + 16kbps control) for every simultaneous conversation. If your ISP is not delivering much more than that or if other devices in your home or other programs in your hosting PC are depriving MJ of enough bandwidth, your voice quality will suffer.
You also don't mention where in the nation your MJ's phone number is. As you have also read here, some proxy servers are more congested than others, and that may affect speech quality.
The more you can learn by reading what has transpired before and the more details you can provide about your symptoms and environment, the better your chances are that someone here will be able to help you to solve your problem.

The router is a d-link, WR1310. My ISP server provides 2-3 MB service through a cable connected to a wireless antenna on my home. I have 2 USB ports on my Dell laptop computer that I use as a desktop. One port is in use connecting my mouse and keyboard through a split adapter. MJ is plugged into the other USB port. I live in rural SE Idaho, about 30 miles north of the Utah Border, near Soda Springs and Preston. Perhaps I just won't be able to ever get really good quality reception in this area.
