using magic jack on a wifi

Can I use the magic jack on my laptop if im out and about alot and use someone elses wifi connection? Or do I have to have a hard line?

As long as you have a good signal, you should be ok. Wireless networks from 802.11b on up are all fast enough to handle it as long as your connection is good. In other words, you probably want to be close to the WAP (base).

You may have to contend with other traffic on the network though, especially at public wifi hotspots. And there is always the possibility that something interferes with the wireless signal (some wireless phones can interfere).

You only need to borrow 80kbps in each direction for each conversation. SIP works just fine even on an old Proxim RangeLan2 network (very secure, but only 1.6Mbps).

Short answer is "yes. Works well. When I work at a client's office, I connect to their wifi, plug in my MJ and plug in my small desk phone (regular land line phone I throw in my bag). Completely self contained and if I'm running on batteries, there are no wires other than the short phone cord on the telephone going to the MJ. Looks pretty cool. Again, as others have said, wired is preferred over wifi for better call quality, but wifi works.

I always use mine on my laptop, magic jack and before magic jack alot of other voip services via softphones, never have any problem, (ofcourse connection speed is important)

Now would be a good time to start reading before posting more. There are lively discussions on the whys and wherefores of trying to interface modems of any kind to the MJ dongle, as well as the limitations and caveats involved in distributing the MJ Dial Tone around the house.

When I travel I'm amazed at the number of Hotspots that my Dell laptop and MJ work well.
