I am NEW and have alot of questions

Post by reachj »

Ok here goes my saga: Got rid of landline with ATT (old BellSouth in Alabama) I had the same telephone number for years. Finally, we were able to get DSL thru ATT (BellSOuth) as I am in rural area. When I got DSL I ditched landline to save money. ATT told me I could always get my old landline number back since the DSL account will be set up under that "telephone number" preventing it from being given to future telephone subscriber. So, if I get Majic Jack can I request or get that telephone number to use with Majic Jack?
Also, I have a Panasonic Plain Paper Fax & Copier. I'd love to be able to fax again. IS it possible to use fax machine with MJ?
I hope you guys will forgive my lack of knowledge with MJ but as I stated, I am new to this. I have not even bought one yet at Wal MArt... waiting for something simpler and fancier to come along I guess. Also, if I buy the thing at Wal Mart for 19.95 do I still have to subscribe with Majic JAck separately?

Your "saga" is very common here. What you need to do is look at the top of this page under the words "Unofficial magic Jack forum" and find the Search button. Using Search you will find that LNP is not supported at all by MJ and you will learn what is necessary to have any chance of getting a fax to go through any VoIP device.

The only twist that is unique in your story is your dry DSL element. Even if MJ were to someday implement LNP, you would not be able to port your AT&T number to MJ (or anyone else) because that number is still in active service with AT&T. AT&T's receipt of an LNP request from your new carrier would certainly cause confusion, and may cause your DSL line to go dead once the request went through, just as it would cause your "old" POTS line to go dead once the number moved to the new service provider.

Since you are on DSL you need to keep at least minimum service on that line (I would assume around $5-6/month) you can forward calls on this number to your MJ on noone but you would know the difference. However all you outgoing calls, those that actually costs money, can be made on your MJ.
An important note though, why you might want to saty off MJ:
I'm not convinced that DSL is actually fast, and stable enough to keep your calls steady with MJ.
According to MJ themselves:
A minimum bandwidth UPLOAD speed of 128 kb/s is required.
You may test your bandwidth speed at

dsl with no voice plan using magic jack

Post by karenriley »

I have dsl with no voice plan which means I have a phone line with att but a dead phone line. I also have a magic jack hooked up to my computer. I didn't have a phone line to start with. I only had dsl with no voice plan. Then I got me a magic jack hooked it up to my computer and now I have a home phone now. It works great other than when it storms then the magic jack doesn't work. But I don't get on computer anyways when it's storming. I've had my magic jack since last august 2008. I've not had any problems with my magic jack. It's awesome for only $20.00/year.

Welcome to the show reachj!!! If you decide to do mJ, then buy it through a retailer. Single year while you learn.

I recommend you read alot of the threads. It will help as you pick things up.

Start out with a single phone connected directly to the mJ. As you work through any speed/speech issues you will then decide on the host for the mJ.

Remember to Search as your path dictates. Don't try to rush it as there is a defined learning curve if you want the most out of mJ.

You are in the right place!!
