Mexico question

Post by roving »

I live in Mexico for 6 months each year and I use MagicJack to make my US calls. Is there a way for people to call my MJ number in the US and have that call reach me through my MJ here in Mexico? Would paying for international calls to MX do the job? I don't think so, but would like to find a way to make it work. Answers or suggestions appreciated.

Anyone who calls your USA MJ # will reach you no matter where you are as long as you have a broadband connection. If calling you here is a local call for them then calling you there will still be a local call for them.

Mexico question

Post by roving »

Thanks for your reply, Joe.

I have had friends place a call to my MJ US nuimber. One was in the states and one was using their Vonage phone from here in Mexico.

Both got the message "disconnected or no longer in service". Do I need to work on a setting or something to cure this problem?

That is odd......... Unless Vonage doesnt play nice with another VOIP service!
Other than that no settings that I know of. BUT there are MUCH smarter people on here than me, I am sure someone will have an idea..

Mexico question-still

Thanks again, Joe. Obviously I sure don't know the answer. I would have to assume that it being an international call would have some effect. Why the 'disconnected' message, I just don't know. Maybe someone else can help here.

I ASSUME your MJ works just fine making and getting calls otherwise?
Well it is not an international call Per Se.. They are just calling your MJ# ( local ) and you happen to be elsewhere. I have read many on here have used it in China and many other places out of the USA with no problems..
Are you using teh same PC there as here?

MAYBE you have a crappy and slow connection in Mexico?? This might be casuing problems??

Mexico question - still

Post by roving »

Hi Joe, I've got a good and reliable broadband connection here, so there is something that I must be missing, or is wrong with my US phone number that I need to troubleshoot or fix or something, so that folks in the US can call me here in MX. Still puzzled.

I use a laptop here, but have used it in the states with MJ. My base unit in states is a desktop and it works fine with MJ. I just haven't tried to call someone in MX from the states. I don't know anyone that travels to MX that uses a MJ in the states. Will just have to work it out, I guess.

I appreciate your help.

I was in Mexico last month with my MJ and it worked fine both incoming and outgoing. Maybe the ISP is blocking the ports or VOIP traffic.

Hi Roving,
Two questions.

Can you confirm that you are able to make outgoing calls from Mexico with your setup consisting of the MJ plugged into your laptop? The problem then is that people are unable to contact you when they dial your MJ number and that they get a message that your number is out of service, correct?

Assuming you can make calls successfully, when you call people back in the US, what number are they reporting on their caller ID's? Is this the same number as you have given them to call you?

Mexico question

Hi Tony, You have it correct. I call from here (Mexico)with no problems at all. The number that people in the US are calling is the number MJ assigned to me and that I pass on to them to try. I have a friend in Nevada that has tried off and on to call me, the latest being last Sunday, with no results. A friend here called that number using Vonage and got the same "disconnected or out of service" message. Before coming to MX the Nevada friend called me successfully frequently. I'd appreciate any guidance in finding out what is wrong, as I would really like for it to work as intended as people in the US want to call me but can't. Thanks for your interest.

Toney - Sorry, I failed to answer your last question. I just called and talked to the guy in Nevada and his caller ID showed my correct MJ number. Hope this helps.

Mexico Question

Post by roving »

I found that I caused my own problem so long ago that I forgot about it. I had enabled 'Call Forwarding' so calls to my MJ number were being forwarded to my home phone which is temporarily disconnected while I am in Mexico. I disabled the Call Forwarding and all works as it should. I appreciate all of your help and interest, but maybe we all learned something from my being a DUMMY. I apologize for wasting your time.

Hola,
Excellent! Glad you resolved the problem. And not at all a waste of time, it's a good brain exercise to wade through the variables and try and come up with a logical series of tests to identify the culprit. Mind you, checking the call forwarding would have been far down on my list so I learned something.
