Communicating with Tivo

Post by atc1 »

I connected Magicjack to my whole house wiring. I had to install the 100K resistor fix in order to get the CID working.

When Tivo calls out, I can hear the modems trying to negotiate (handshake). I keep getting a failure indication between the Tivo and their network. I installed an inline DSL filter, however that did not help. Any ideas?

Do a Google search on using Tivo with VOIP. There are quite a few tricks out there that may help (like slowing down the Tivo modem connection speed), although using Tivo over VOIP will always be iffy. You don't mention which Tivo you have. If it's a standalone series II, you can always use setup a network to connect rather than phone line. If it's the DirecTV model, you don't really need to call in at all.

Series 2 and later TiVos can be attached to your home network to bypass using the modem. Do a Google search.

Even old Series 1 Tivos with network cards can be hacked to dial over internet with no phone line. As I remember, you added a prefix to the dial-out phone #. That caused the unit to go through a proxy somewhere that simulated a phone exchange.

I forgot that one juniorbodine. Thanks for mentioning it. I still have 2 S1's network cards with/interface for TiVo. I will sell both cards if someone is interested. PM me.
