"Normal" Expectations
I have been using my MJ for about three weeks and I am curious as to are some of the things I see and experience are normal for others. I understand that since MJ is in beta (perpetual?) things such as voice mail come and go depending on work being done on them.
It takes about 3 or 4 minutes after the splash screen shows up before I can make a call. What do others get? If I have a web page over the MJ screen and minimise it, the MJ screen keeps the web page that was over it visible for several minutes.
Also, is it better to connect the dongle before or after loading a web site?
Just curious,
Carl

cmankat,
Before attempting to answer you first few questions could you give us a little more information:
1. OS
2. Router
3. Computer speed/memory
4. anything else you can think of that I have left out.
Also, is it better to connect the dongle before or after loading a web site?
The Dongle/WEB site question? Please expand on this, I don't think I understand what you are asking. Mine is hooked up and when I turn the computer on, everything just does it's own thing! Works for me. But that is probably not what you meant.

It all depends how fast you connect to the Internet/MJ servers and what programs you have running at the moment... What is your up and down speed?Xen1969 wrote:From the time I plug my MagicJack into the USB port it takes about 50 seconds before I can make a call. As little as 23 seconds when restarting from the softphone (Menu --> Advanced users --> Restart).
The minimizing issue --> not normal.
If you run MJ as a service it will connect faster.
Sorry, I should have included some info to help out.
I have a Toshiba Laptop running 1.6 ghz, 2 Gb memory, OS is Win XP Media Center w/SP 2. My router is a LinkSys WRT 54G.
Not sure what you mean when you say, "If you run MJ as a service it will connect faster." Needless to say, I'm still facing a steep learning curve.
TIA,
Carl

Re: "Normal" Expectations
I've found that you could bypass the splash screen by not using the MJ-created shortcut to start your mj. Instead, in XP go to C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Application Data\mjusbsp\ and create a shortcut on your desktop to magicJack.exe. Then right-click on the desktop shortcut, select Properties and replace whatever is in the Target field with the following:cmankat wrote:It takes about 3 or 4 minutes after the splash screen shows up before I can make a call. What do others get? If I have a web page over the MJ screen and minimise it, the MJ screen keeps the web page that was over it visible for several minutes.
Code: Select all
magicJack.exe /foreground /scf _magicJackPersonalDataRoot "G:\magicJack"
Now you can start mj by using this shortcut and it skips the splash screen! It's a much quicker startup.
In Vista, you can find the magicjack.exe file in C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\mjusbsp\
After that the directions are the same as in XP.

sbw07,
Three questions Mr. sbw.
1. What splash screen? all I get is a little loading speed bar and then the MJ softphone. Either the old way or your way.
2. Startup speed, I haven't taken a stopwatch to it but I don't really see any difference.
3. What does this: C:\Users\George\AppData\Roaming\mjusbsp\magicJackLoader.exe do different than yours: C:\Users\George\AppData\Roaming\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe /foreground /scf _magicJackPersonalDataRoot "I:\magicJack"

1. Hmm... I was always getting a splash screen in the shape of a magicJack with the text "One minute of patience for a lifetime of savings" which would hang around for a while before proceeding to the speed bar. It would steal the focus from whatever app I was in middle of using and it would not let any other app come to the front.HolmanGT wrote:Three questions Mr. sbw.

2. The startup would only be faster if you originally had the splash screen.
3. I'm not sure exactly, but it seems that magicJackLoader.exe will sometimes act as a setup file, resetting all the mj defaults before opening mj - see http://www.phoneservicesupport.com....magicjackloader-exe-doesn-t-work for details. This command sequence bypasses the Loader; starting mj with whatever settings you had on last use.
sbw07,
Your reply:
1. Minute of patience, OK I know what your are taking about. I just spent a little time trying to make it come up, it doesn't seem to do that anymore and if I was to guess it stopped showing up a couple of days ago when they revamped the MagicJackFIX Java Script. If I unplug/plug my MJ in I will get it otherwise it doesn't seem to show up by just clicking the startup icon. (???)
2. Yes - I can see where getting rid of that would speed things by 15 - 30 seconds. I never actually timed it. I was too busy being amused by the programmers sense of humor "Lucky You" kind of thing.
3. Yes - I knew I had seen that sequence before just couldn't remember where. I would love to know just exactly what all it does with the call to the executable with command line options and the followed by a path statement ( I guess that is what it is ).
sbw07, since you are using Vista (I presume by the paths you use) does your MJ Autostart? I have tried everything with no luck. I can put the startup icon or your version in the startup folder and that works but it should Autostart on it's own. When I run MagicFIX it pops up and say I am not set to autostart would I like it to auto start. I have answered yes to that question enough that I feel I am entitled to a quipy doll or something but still no Autostart. On my XP machine it Autostarts just fine.

@ Holman
Sorry for the delay I just never seemed to have received the notification email.
Yes, I am using Vista (as my signature implies), and no it doesn't autostart. Originally I was bothered by this until I decided that I'd actually rather it not autostart.
Interestingly mj places a program called cdloader2.exe into my startup programs every time I start mj (I block it with WinPatrol)- even when I allow it to it still doesn't autostart

sbw07,
Sorry I didn't notice you SIG. I let my CDloader run all the time but no autostart. I am like you I probably prefer it not to auto start but I think that should be my choice and not the machines choice.

I see discussion of how to start MJ, but I don't see how to stop it from running automatically when MJ is plugged in. When I plug my magic jack in, it is my K: drive and there is an autorun.inf file that I can't seem to rename or change the properties. How do we stop this autorun file from running automatically and starting the "One minute of patience, hours of cummulative wasted downtime screen" ?

I tried the registry hack and didn't seem to make any difference, but I accept that I probably did it wrong and did learn some interesting information about autorun files and system vulnerability.
I guess, stopping the autorun was just an act of desperation, I don't really mind if it runs and actually prefer if the Magic Jack autorun starts up. What I mind is the rude "Moment of patience, hours of wasted time" splash screen that insists on being in the foreground, can not be minimized or moved.
Must be in the .exe file, doesn't someone have a hack that changes the .exe file and eliminates the splash screen. Or better yet, how about MJ listening and fixing the issue? Sorry, just ticks me off when companies with good products don't seem to care about fixing easy issues.

I believe it can be prevented from auto-starting, think I have seen some post on it but it ain't going to be easy because anytime MJ starts up it completely reinstalls itself. Delete the softphone out of the MagicJack directory and the very next time you restart everything will magically reappear (pun intended).Denver Dave wrote:I tried the registry hack and didn't seem to make any difference, but I accept that I probably did it wrong and did learn some interesting information about autorun files and system vulnerability.

How to eliminate "splash screen"
I think you can find that image in the mjusbsp directory. Replace it with a picture of your goldfish, or something.Denver Dave wrote:What I mind is the rude "Moment of patience, hours of wasted time" splash screen that insists on being in the foreground, can not be minimized or moved.
If your goldfish gets on your nerves too, you can copy the MJ shortcut, and set the properties to:
Code: Select all
"[D:\Profiles\{user name}\Application Data]\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe" /foreground /scf _magicJackPersonalDataRoot "[G:]\magicJack"
Only change the parts within brackets, remove the brackets, and don't remove the quotes.
The above will run MJ without runing the "loader" program.
FYI, you can add
Code: Select all
/lf logfile.txt

here is the answer to have magicjack start without the splash screen...
