hi, i have my asterisk pbx configured to make and receive calls using my magicjack service flawlessly. i was wondering how they find out if you are doing this, and if they will actually terminate my service for doing this. any experiences are appreciated. reading through the TOS the only thing i saw that may be against it is reverse engineering the software to get the username and password.

I have 8 MJ's on an SPA8000 for almost a year now. Granted majority of it are DID (direct inward dialed) calls and very few outbound calls with the exception of the facsimile machine. I really haven't had many issues with the exception of the landscapers cutting the underground service drop for our broadband internet service to the building. Far as the parent company is concerned they are CLEC (competitive local exchange carrier) and they get a cut of the interchange fees on all calls routing into their network.
In general, I don't believe they are really bothered by "advanced" users that utilise completely hardware based gizmos, ATAs, softphones, etc. We should know better not to bother them with issues that may arise utilising them.
The interesting part is that they are utilising SIP which is pretty much standard in the VoIP business. Vonage and some others are proprietary in nature. The only reason they are utilising SIP is that it is cheap to setup.
In my field work, most of the people that have MJ’s are happy they are getting dial tone services by plugging into their computer’s USB port. Every now and then I have some inquiries if there is a way to utilise the MJ via an ATA without the having their computer on 24/7. My advice them is it is not for the faint of heart and it requires a lot of research (by the way: Google is your best friend). For the most part if your machine is not hosed by a virus, spyware, or it is loaded with unknown processes which is making your machine to move like the mud on the bottom of the Mississippi delta. It works quite well amazingly.
The part of obtaining the SIP credentials from the dongle itself is definitely in the grey area of the ToS. I haven’t personally known of any MJ user utilising an ATA having their service terminated because of it. Granted the MJ dongle’s password being rekeyed because someone did the “I just can’t believe I did that” routine by plugging the MJ to the USB port of their computer whilst their ATA is in full operational mode.

Final note: For craps and giggles I have plugged in my TiVo to my ATA and made manually initialise the updates via "dialup" mode and surprisingly it works. I wouldn't try to surf the NET that way, it would be just too counterproductive. Text chatting from one endpoint to endpoint via terminal mode at 14.4 kbps is another rant for some other time…

That's my quarter's worth, but not enough to call someone who really cares at a pay telephone booth...
thanks for the reply. i already have my magicjack account fully operational with incoming and outgoing calls on an asterisk based pbx. ive also gotten it to forward calls to my cell phone if someone calling over a pots dials a certain extension. my next project is to set up an extension that will prompt the user for a phone number and dial it. this way myself and family members can make long distance calls for free. if anyone needs the trunk config let me know. i found about 10 different ones and none of them worked for me. with a little tweaking i got it running though.
