MJ disconnecting my internet service

Post by actruckin »

I have had the MJ for about a month and when I plug it up to my computer at home and my laptop (at different times of course), I can make calls for about 2 hours. After that, my internet service cuts off (AT&T) and I can't look up any type of internet page. I have to unplug MJ and then plug it back in. When I do this, it starts to work again and my computer works fine. If I start my computer up w/out MJ attached, I don't have any problems on my desktop or laptop. To make it even more confusing, I took it to my work and plugged it up to my other desktop and laptop and it worked great all day without interruption. I have reformatted the HD at home, uninstalled MusicMatch (which I hear causes some problems), run the "magic fix" app, chatted w/tech support(joke), called AT&T tech support and line support and they said that they cleared or "recharged" the lines, and still nothing. I can figure out why I can use the MJ at my office, but not at home. I am using the same Linksys Wireless-G routers and everthing down to the same anti-virus (AVG) program and I am baffled. Please help someone!

actruckin,

Do you have any power saving features turned on. I seem to remember a post about if you machine goes to sleep when it wakes up MagicJack continues to sleep. I don't know if anyone has come up with a fix but I would try turning off all the hibernate and sleep stuff and see if your problem goes away.

I did turn the hibernate off and set all of my settings to "always on". It is just weird that it works at my office and not at home.

I am using a HP 360n (1.?Ghz, 512ram) that is directly connected to the router. I also have a Dell 600m that is connected through wireless network. The router is the Linksys WRT54G. The laptop that I have at the office, which I am going to take home tonight, is a Toshiba Satellite A55. The only differences that I can tell is that at my office, I am using the Earthlink DSL service (Home is AT&T(aka BellSouth) and that the office has a higher DSL speed than I have at home.

I also meant to say that I have hooked it up to all of my USB ports on both computers at the house with the same results. I have also tried to open the ports like the MJ tech people told me to and that didn't seem to work.

I'll try that when I get home. Hopefully that will work, but should that cut off the entire internet service for my computer? I only have this problem when I have the MJ connected at my house. I love technology. Thank you so much for your help so far. what a great site!

I was never really able to stop this problem on my wifes compaq(hp)but then again it does not do it anymore,I think it was fixed when I reformated the hd and upgraded from xp home to pro with all updates available and to be fair I have not tried my MJ on the laptop, mainly because its working so good on my custom built home pc and I do not want to push my luck unless I have too.

CuriousGeorge,

"I do not want to push my luck unless I have too."

Your statement is probably one of the most profound pearls of wisdom on the entire site. Even it doesn't fit your forum handle real well... Curiosity an cats or something like that.

PS - Oh-Hell, I'll tell the whole world that Curiosity thing has caused me to "Format C:\" more times than I care to admit.

Would you think that this has something to do with my internet service provider? I did disable the power management, but then I checked my laptop that I brought home from work (the computer that has been working) and it also was set to the same power management settings like my computer.

actruckin,

I wouldn't think it would be anything your ISP is doing. But they are usually pretty helpful if you give them a call.

I am sure someone with AT&T will jump in here and let us know if they have experienced your problem, but I don't remember anyone blaming this type of problem on their ISP. The only thing that has been bandied about is some ISP(s) lockout the ports required and the one poster I remember saying this said he called them and they unlocked it for him. But that said it is not quite the problem your are having. His was and always thing and yours seems to be intermittent or something timing out.

PS - Did you ever take a look at what curiousgeorge googled up. He is probably on to something and that something being a quirk in your system.

Don't use your modem with USB-it is much better if you use it via Ethernet anyway, and you will no longer have this problem.
