Firewall & Antivirus Software that plays nice with Magic

Post by smaerd58 »

After having the dreaded Error 3 come up on my MagicJack softphone and not being able to make or receive calls but still had a dial tone, and trying to deal with inept CS for MagicJack and trying every conceivable combination of fixes to no avail. Then CS final answer to me was contact my router manufacturer and ISP because my ports were not open even after using there product for 4 weeks straight with no real problems. I did my own extensive search. I finally realized that my antivirus software and my firewall software had just received new version updates. I removed my antivirus and that didn't do it so I removed firewall. Just as I suspected the new firewall version was now more intense and blocked ports. First firewall was Comodo and antivirus was AVG. So I thought I would start this thread for the newbie’s that might run into this problem.

These are programs that play nice with MagicJack and are also FREE if anyone else has something that works that is user friendly maybe we should make this a sticky?

I'm using my MJ on a Dell 8200 laptop Running XP Pro SP2. I use Avast! 4.7 Home and ZoneAlarm 7. I use default port settings, and I didn't have to mess around with custom port settings. I have had NO major problems. The only minor problem I get is that call quality goes down to cell phone quality during "prime time" hours. Otherwise, it is as good as my land line. I blame this on my ISP.

These opinions are strictly my own. However, if you really want them, we can negotiate.

Oh-boy am I going to catch hell over this:

1. I use Windows Live OneCare (combination firewall and anti-virus). (no tweaking to run MJ).

2. My router is a Dlink DIR-655 (no tweaking to run MJ, however to pass the MagicJackFIX diagnostic I had to turn off SIP control in the router)

I am currently running MJ on Vista Home Premium with Microsoft Live OneCare (virus, spyware & firewall).
I've run it previously with Norton Internet Security 2008, and with F-Secure 2008.
With all 3 I've had no significant problems and did not have to play around with any settings.
