Wow...I'm new here and was hoping to find some tips on better ways to use my MJ. I'm finding that I don't understand alot of what is being discussed, but I want to learn. Maybe at some point we could create a sticky with some useful terms and definitions.
For example I had to looked up what was meant by softphone (boy do I feel stupid) and I thought I was at least a little bit technically savvy.
I also don't understand what it means to use MJ as a service rather than an application???
I think I'm gonna start my own as I try to digest all this info!
Softphone:
In computing, a softphone is a software program for making telephone calls over the Internet using a general purpose computer, rather than using dedicated hardware. Often a softphone is designed to behave like a traditional telephone, sometimes appearing as an image of a phone, with a display panel and buttons with which the user can interact.
SIP:
The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a signalling protocol used for establishing sessions in an IP network. Over the last couple of years, the Voice over IP community has adopted SIP as its protocol of choice for signalling.
Dongle:
A dongle is a small piece of hardware that connects to a computer. In this case, it is your MJ hardware.
Thin Client:
Although the term thin client usually refers to software, it is increasingly used for computers, such as network computers and Net PCs, that are designed to serve as the clients for client/server architectures. A thin client is a network computer without a hard disk drive, whereas a fat client includes a disk drive.
ATA:
Analog telephony adapter, a device for connecting analog telephones to a Voice-over-IP system. Specific models include PAP2T-NA and RTP300.
