I'm reposting the below...any help??

I'm a little confused with this spoofer. Do I need to change the default settings under "configuration"?? If I do what exactly goes in the magicJack Proxy box, and what goes into the Local magicJack IP box. Thanks.

Problem

Does anyone have a problem with their phone no longer functioning when they edit their hosts file? When I place the appropriate entry in the hosts file and start the phone it has a message stating "Please connect to the Internet and double-click here" in the phone's status window.

Stewart and MagicHack, thanks for a great little product that works!

Hey MagicHack, as an enhancement, you could have the tool automatically install to STARTUP or the RUN in the registry. Manual is easy but hey, I'm lazy! :D

Okay, I got beyond this by adding the port to the hosts file. It is still not working and as far as I can tell when I add an entry to the host file the phone uses a different server. It is dynamically changing servers. I reached the point where I had 4 different servers in my hosts file and it continued to point to new servers.

I do not know how anyone else has gotten this to work.

I just got this little baby in the mail today, but the spoof program isn't working, any troubleshooting advice would be great

EDIT: N/M Got spoofing to work forgot they won't let you spoof to toll free numbers (kind of odd)

Trapping CPN of the incoming callers isn't working tho -- it doesn't say 'ANONYMOUS' but it's just blank with no detail....
perhaps the CLEC serving my number doesn't receive CPN on blocked calls, and therefore just sends nothing?

Thank you so much for this! It's so great, everything works for me but the name, but it's not important to me. Thanks again, I learned a lot! I sooo look foward torunning this from the router...

I am about to give up. I tried this and it still does not work. I ALWAYS get "Please connect to the Internet and double click here" on the phones display when I have this information in the hosts file.

ANI SPOOFING?

Post by phreakyhigh »

Now that caller ID spoofing is available, what is needed to spoof ANI? I was so into the caller ID spoof that until I called someone with an 800 number and they read back my REAL number to me realized that the ANI is still not hidden or changed.

it's actually the softswitch that is preventing you from spoofing CPN, so it's essentially impossible to spoof directly to 800 #s from magicjack.

you can however find diverters that PASS your cpn and use them to call toll-free #s if you're lucky enough to find a diverter

Can't get Spoofing to work?

Post by jnatkinmj »

Hey MagicHack:

I can't get either the 1.0 or 1.1 version to work. I've tried both the nashville and chicago proxies. As with many other MJ users, I have GC and want my GC number to appear when I make outbound calls. I live in the Chicago area; you mentioned that some providers block spoofing. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this?

Thanks for any help

I tried using the spoofer to confuse a friend by having his own cell # show up on the cell, instead I confused the cell phone
Upon seeing its own caller id, the system (Sprint) assumed that the owner was trying to check his voicemail. So I was let into his message box without a password! I was able to listen to all his messages!

So you load the spoofer and then magicjack. Once magicjack says "ready to call" you add the proxy to your hosts file? Is this correct?

Yup! Thanks for headsup  This is a serious issue with privacy and I would think MagicJack should start implementing a patch ASAP to block Caller-ID spoofing and to prevent possible law suits stemming from this

Thanks, worked like a charm. Question though, what happens in a power outage when the PC reboots? I would guess the phone will not work at all since the hosts file already has the entry and I will then get the message about connecting the phone to the Internet.

This works on cingular too, except that it will ring the person's phone, so they know you're trying to break into your voicemail! However if you 'block caller id' and set 'your magicjack number' to the cingular number it will ring their phone as 'private' and when they send you to voicemail you'll be in their voicemail!

Yeah, I was right and will now stop using the spoofer all together. If I reboot, the phone loads but since the hosts file already has been altered the phone cannot connect and does not work. Not very useful for a whole home deployment.

Post by ifixnets »

I have running for my whole home. Easy actually. Here's what I did:

Stop magicjack
Edit the hosts file in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc with the information provided.
Load the spoofer (I placed the file in c:\windows\system32 and created a shortcut and placed in the Startup folder to start at login)
Restart magicjack

Be sure your device auto logs in so that if the pc restarts you don't have to worry about the phone being down.

This does not work for me, I HAVE to load magicjack and wait for it to say "Ready to call" THEN edit the hosts file. If I edit the Hosts file prior to running MagicJack I get the "Connect to the Internet and double-click here" message. I can get the whole thing up and running perfectly but if the PC reboots then the phone loads with an already edited Hosts file and will not connect. Who knows what the difference is in my PC but that is how it works. Until someone here explained that is how they got it to work I could not get the spoofer to work at all.

What operating system are you running? Service pack level, .net patches, etc...

Unless you are using the hosts file for other networking, the only thing that should be unremarked is the 127.0.0.1 locahost and the 127.0.0.1 "magicjack proxy address".

Keeping this simple, my purpose for using callerID spoofing is because MJ doesn't have my (575) area code, and many people in my area would not even answer their phone if the MJ area code I had to choose (720) showed up on their callerID. Using callerID spoofing lets them know it is a local call coming in. And, using my GrandCentral (575) number as the number that shows up on their CallerID gives them a number to call without being charged long distance (I think this is true). No evil intent here! If magicJack will get my (575) area code activated (with a nearby city prefix) and allow me to change to it, the problem will be solved! (575) Elephant Butte, NM -or- Truth Or Consequences, NM - and NOT just Las Cruces, NM (75 miles away) nor (720) Denver, CO that I use now!

Aside for that.......I LOVE MJ!

Win XP Pro SP2, all patches.

I don't think you understood my point so here are the steps I take:
1. Start Spoofer
2. Start MagicJack and wait for "Ready to call".
3. Add 127.0.0.1 "MagicJack Proxy" to Hosts file.
Spoofer Now works...Let's say there is a power outage and system reboots . . . now what happens is this

1. Spoofer starts
2. Hosts file already has 127.0.0.1 "MagicJack Proxy"
3. MagicJack starts and says "Please connect to the Internet and double-click here"
Phone will not work.

Given the above scenario if I successfully use the spoofer my phone will not function if the system reboots.

I think you don't have the right server settings in your hosts file (unless you've got some security program that is rewriting the hosts file upon reboot). When the computer reboots, is the entry that you created in the hosts file gone?

Today magicjack client wanted to use a DIFFERENT proxy server and my spoofing stopped working, is there anyway to get a list of proxy servers so the caller ID spoofing program always works no matter which proxy the client trys to use?

Thanks but I do understand what you are saying, I get it. Here's something interesting.....out of the blue, mine did this exact same thing! Played around with some settings and here's what I discovered:

I am in NC and I choose a number out of Dallas, TX since there wasn't one in my area.
I do not know if certain proxy's will only route certain area codes or not but mine will not spoof the number at all unless I use the nashville proxy.
To address my 'Please connect to the internet....' message, I simply changed my hosts file to only have 127.0.0.1 'nashville proxy' and took out the one for 127.0.0.1 localhost completely. I was then able to reboot multiple times and the system continued to work properly.

Another thing that changed out of the blue is that after originally using the spoofer, I was able to dial local numbers WITHOUT having to dial the area code. Now, I am back to dialing the area code but at least the spoofing is working again. WEIRD!

Thanks so much, I know the Caller ID spoofer asks what proxy to spoof on, but it seems that the magic jack program picks and chooses what proxy it wants to use when you start the program, and it also doesn't seem to matter what IP address you put it in the spoofer as the magic jack proxy so long as the proxy IP's are listed in your host file

Spoofer worked fine first time around, for a few days...
It stopped working, and now I have tried every conceivable restart order, Host file editing, etc,: no spoofing.
Running MJ on a Windows 2003 Server.

Anyone had this happen, and successfully got it to work again ?

Thanks,

Put all those proxy's in your host file above^ and set nashville's as the server you want to use, that's what I did when it stopped working and no problems now. BTW find a phone number that reads your number back and call that before placing a call to your target that way you can be sure the spoof works. I use Time Warner's local cust service number =)

I have already tried putting all the proxy names in the Hosts file, but I am not sure I understand what you mean by "set nashville's as the server you want to use".
Looks like one has to enter the Proxy IP address in the Spoofer config (in this case 67.90.152.70), and have the matching Proxy name in the Hosts file.... Is this correct ? If this is the case, why all the rest of the proxies in the Hosts file ?
Do you have to setup things in a particular order , i.e. start spoofer, start MJ and then Edit the Hosts file ?

Sorry for all the questions, I am just trying to understand the process.

I downloaded and installed the spoofer, typed in the spoofed number, edited the hosts file with the Nashville and rebooted. It's all good.

does anyone know if nashville is the only proxy that supports spoofing? If anyone has had success with other proxies will you please reply with which ones they were? As you can tell I am not having luck except with nashville and I believe I am having connection issues with nashville

I still can't figure out why I can't get the spoofer to work. I edited my "Host" file erasing everying but the "Nashville" proxy. In the spoofer I typed my MJ number and the number I want showing up on caller id. Under configuration I have 127.0.0.1 as my MJ Proxy, under Magic Jack Ip I have my IP address which I got by going to one of those "What's my ip sites". I started the spoofer, started MJ...when it said "ready to call" I called my cell phone but the caller ID displays my MJ number not the number I want to have displayed "Spoofed". Any advice? I'm running windows XP, SP2.

rubeninfl,

Try these settings on the spoofer:

Magicjack Proxy: 71.5.91.70
Local Magicjack IP: 127.0.0.1

71.5.91.70 is MJ proxy in Chicago. You can also do a nslookup to find the ip of a different mj proxy server of your choice. The server names are listed a few posts back in this thread.

So, for example you want to use New York proxy in this box, run DOS and type "nslookup proxy1.newyork.talk4free.com" (without the quotes, of course). It'll give you the IP of that server - 67.106.135.70 in this example. 67.106.135.70 would be the address you put into Magicjack Proxy box in the spoofer.

Dukeohama, thanks! I got it to work with your instructions. I don't what I was thinking putting my IP address in the spoofer. Now I'm trying to figure out why it's only displaying my GS number and not my name. Is it not displaying my name because the carrier I'm using won't display it? I'm calling my cellphone which is with ATT. Shows the number I'm spoofing but not my name. Actually, I can't remember if I've ever seen a name if it wasn't on my contact list. This is great???

I just dumped skype because I didn't have outbound caller ID. I'm going to have to do this until MJ get's my area code. Thanks!

Except for locally generated names (in callee's phone list), you won't have your name displayed unless:
1. The number you are spoofing is with a carrier that provides a CNAM database (landline & a few VoIP providers; MJ and GC don't)
and
2. The callee's carrier does a CNAM lookup (landline and some VoIP providers; most cell carriers don't).

Anyone have any problems with the spoofing not working with the nashville proxy? It was working fine until last night and is still not working. Thanks for any replies.
