Interesting DOM Flash Alternative
Below is a link for some interesting flash memory alternatives. The 4000x speed ones are nice too, but a little pricier. They *might* fit in the provided space of the t5700, but I'm not sure. If it didn't fit, you would need a 44 pin female to male cable which I have seen on ebay.

I'll stick to compact flash due to its cheap price and easy upgrade in the future, but wanted to point this out for those interested.

stroths wrote:I hope you are kidding about using a dremel to make it fit. If not, please don't do that again. Different RAM is purposely made so it won't fit in different generation RAM slots as they have different designs and are pinned differently. Hopefully you did not fry anything on the thin client.northwst wrote:I can confirm that ddr2 does not work.... they are keyed so that they will not fit anyway... but my dremel made one fit... as soon as I plugged the power in it made funny sounds so I did'nt push it...took it out, and in the process of buying a 512 ddr.
I now have the extra t5710 with the power adapter in hand so I can ship it to Kulumbaa if he still wants it.
you guys have given me something else to do now...damn... I will have to get this cf going also.
ohh and here is a good 512 ddr link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0224249403
no it did'nt hurt anything I am using it right now... I have ordered a cf adapter/cable and I am going to look for a cheap 2 or 4 gb cf card

northwst,
First you must have some big ones. I don't know anyone that would dare do what you did with the Dremel Tool. Second go buy some lottery tickets, considering you got away with plugging int the modified memory and not killing your Thin Client.
Actually what I wanted to say is the prices on those modules you linked to don't seem all that much more that SanDisk type III CF cards and may actually have a better life expectancy considering they were designed for hard drive service.
I read a couple of articles that talk about special circuitry in flash units that are uses at hard drive to disperse the read/writes evenly across the entire flash module and was also the reason this article claimed that defragging flash drives is not a good idea because that tends to pile everything up at the front of the flash module defeating the logic they have built in to disperse the read/writes.

My Upgrade Suggestion for those wanting an easy stock upgrad
For anyone looking for a simple plug and play flash memory upgrade, check these out. Based on the pictures, they look identical in dimensions to the stock memory that came with the t5700. They even have the hole in the same place the stock one does for a stock plastic support attached to the motherboard. If you had the cash and want to stay as close to stock as possible, these would be the way to go.
The 512mb version would be the best way to go for most of you that just want to use the thin client as a magic jack pc. You should have around 256mb free after installing the magicjack with that module. This gives you plenty of room to install java or dot net if you wanted. For those really wanting to play around and do some tweaking or install a full version of XP as I did, you will need a larger size like the 1gb or 2gb.
512mb - $22 + $7 UPS Shipping
http://ec.transcendusa.com/product/Item ... 2MDOM44H-S
1gb - $31.70 + $7 UPS Shipping

2gb - $52.70 + $7 UPS Shipping

4gb - $91.40 + $7 UPS Shipping

8gb - $205 + free UPS Shipping
http://ec.transcendusa.com/product/Item ... 8GDOM44H-S
I can also see that pin 1 is in the same position as the stock unit, so its facing the right direction. The Transcend is representative of the links above. The Apacer is the one that comes stock in the t5700 series

stroths,
First - Outstanding find. I searched all over hell for those and never came close. Thank you very much for helping me spend my money.
I noticed in your sig you are running a CF card for you flash drive. How is it working out. How is the speed or can you even notice a difference? also what brand and if it is like a SanDisk is it type I, II, or III?
Thanks again - I have to drop out for a few minutes while I go spend some money.
Oops just notice what looks like a pwr connector in the lower left, does it need power or does it get it from the buss?

I have a 2gb Sony 133x CF I picked up at my local Fry's for $25. It was really slow installing XP as well as dot net and java, but it runs fine now that everything is installed. Its nice having a full version of XP on it. If you go with the full XP route, you have to install the EWF driver to preserve your flash memory from excessive writing.HolmanGT wrote:stroths,

That connector you are seeing should be the master/slave jumper if I am correct. The stock unit has this as well, but in a different location. EDIT: That is the write protect jumper. You will notice that it has writing near it that states "Short: Read Only Open:Normal".
For those wanting something simple and relatively inexpensive, I would suggest the 512mb or the 1gb Trancend flash memory. Should be a perfect fit and its simple.

Well I am going to buy a couple of your new found 512 units do you think the SMI & ECC stuff whatever that is will be compatible with the thin clients.
Also as long as I am stealing all you good ideas and hard work would you link me to the CF card adapter that you used in your system?
Thank again. Please stop me if you have any reservations about the ready made units.
I am a little concerned they may not hold up well - MTBF: 1,000,000 hours

I know there are faster ones out there (i.e. 300x), but I just wanted something relatively quick and cheap. The only issue I ran into was that my full version of XP saw the disk as a removable disk instead of a fixed disk. This caused errors to pop up on every boot about the pagefile. I managed to find an app made for sandisk compact flash that corrected the issue. It basically changes two bytes at the beginning of the CF, so it will identify itself as a fixed disk.

STROTHS,
So are you sayng that I can use one of these to upgrade my 5710's 256 flash drive? And I don't have to buy the adaptor, cable, etc? I just pop out the old 256 and stick in one of these....that's it? If so.... shoot this is great! How sure are you that these will work? Thanks alot!

You are just an incredible knowledge base Mr. Stroths.
But could you give me the link the the CF card ADAPTER you used. I went nutz and purchased a type III CF card at Best Buy but I would like to get the exact same adapter you used. You have already taken all the risk out of that purchase.

Re: My Upgrade Suggestion for those wanting an easy stock up
I can say with almost 100% certainty that these will be a perfect fit replacement for the 256mb you currently have. Basically, any 44 pin CF or disk on module will work on these boards. However, the issue arises to the fit like I encountered. These Transcend brand appear to be almost the exact dimensions of the stock flash.dims24 wrote:STROTHS,

I feel pretty confident that you would be ok going with the Transcend flash modules. If I hadn't already bought my cables and adapters, I would probably go this route.
EDIT: To clarify, you would only need this without any additional cables or CF adapters. You would unplug your 256mb module and plug this new one in its place.

My bad...that's a typo and should have been "two bytes" rather than to bytes You can find out more about the utility I used here . You only need it if you click "My Computer" and it states "removable drive".HolmanGT wrote:It basically changes to bytes at the beginning of the CF, so it will identify itself as a fixed disk

As far as the CF adapter, I went with http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0045736044, but I wouldn't suggest it for anyone with a t5710. It was a very tight fit in my t5710 and it was sandwiched between one of the heatsinks and the inner side of the case lid. It got too hot for my likes and I moved it to my T5700. The 1.2GHz t5710 is full of heatsinks while my 1GHz T5700 has much less which leaves plenty of space for the large adapter I got. The problem with my adapter is it was designed to mimic the footprint of a standard laptop hard drive. It even has bold holes so you could mount it in place of a laptop hard drive.http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Compact_Flash_boot_drive

As far as the Transcends fitting it they are not identical in size an womans fingernail emery board will take care of the tolerance factor.
I looked at the pictures you posted and not only are they very very close in size but it even looks like the same Samsung Flash chip. I can't make out the middle number but the first and last are the same as the Transcend units.
These Transcend flash IDE units are going to put the HP Thin Clients on the endangered species list. Buy now or you may have to pay thru the nose.
Damn - I just purchased three of the 512 units from Transcend and got a "Backorder notice" I hate when that happens. so now the link to the adapter you used is even more important.

The app is called ATCFWCHG.COM and I think it's supposed to be distributed, but if you google you will find it like I did. I put it on my bootable USB drive I created for flashing per the earlier instructions in this thread. I then just ran it from the command line and luckily it worked on my Sony CF. It may or may not work for you as it was designed for Sandisk. Below is a wiki with instructions on its usage. I just ran ATCFWCHG.COM /P /FVaHam wrote:I wish my adapter cards would get here have everything else! Would you mine posting a link to that app to correct the removable issue?

stroths,
I am amazed how powerful we can now make these TC's.
We should call them the "Stroth Client", hehehe!
Now I'm thinking maybe I will get rid of my wifes old pc.
She uses it to chat with her family and friends in the Philippines with yahoo messenger. And she listens to music while chatting.
She uses a headset and a cam while visiting.
Do you think a TC will work for her and these things. It seems like my TC would be fast enough for this.....
And I assume that increasing the size of the flash card doesn't slow down or speed up whatever processor is in the TC.
Anyway it seems the TC would make a nice internet appliance for my wife.
How about the read/writes? To many? Wear out the flash drive to fast doing these things?
Thanks, Mike

If you plan on setting it up as an internet appliance with either XPe or XP and the Enhanced Write Filter then it should be fine. If you need to do more writes, then you would either need a hard drive or a CF microdrive. The CF microdrives aren't as fast as the solid state CF flash cards are, but they don't have the same issues of wearing out. They are basically a miniature hard drive in the form factor of a CF card.dims24 wrote:stroths,

I created a new thread so we can move the upgrade discussion to it. It will be a more centralized thread that I will try to keep updated.
http://www.phoneservicesupport.com/post11850.html#11850
It's also in my signature.
EDIT: I added in some pics of what my upgrade looks like (not pretty, but functional). I also have a comparison picture of the 1GHz t5700 and 1.2 GHz t5710 so you can see the space limitations.

Re: My Upgrade Suggestion for those wanting an easy stock up
dims24,
I don't know if you still need an answer to "will the Transcend units work" but I am sitting here runing a T5710 with a 1GB Transcend flash drive. Not only do they work but they seem faster than the original factory installed flash drives. The little Windows booting green bars only gets a third of the way across the bar before it is thru booting.
Electrically the are an improved version of the original HP units by Apacer. Physical they are IDENTICAL including the nylon snap lock hole used to hold the unit in place.
Put a 1GB Transcend flash drive and a 1GB DDR PC2700 ram module in a T5710 and you effectively have a faster (1.2 GHz verses 1 GHz) and smaller version of the T5720. HP may have great designers but we have "Stroths".
I have absolutely no reservation in recommending the Transcend Flash Drive "these puppies are the Thin Client users panacea"
My sincere appreciation goes out to Mr. stroths for finding these units and sharing this find with the rest of us.

So are you sayng that I can use one of these to upgrade my 5710's 256 flash drive? And I don't have to buy the adaptor, cable, etc? I just pop out the old 256 and stick in one of these....that's it? If so.... shoot this is great! How sure are you that these will work? Thanks alot!

stroths wrote:For anyone looking for a simple plug and play flash memory upgrade, check these out.

1gb - $31.70 + $7 UPS Shipping

8gb - $205 + free UPS Shipping

I can also see that pin 1 is in the same position as the stock unit, so its facing the right direction. The Transcend is representative of the links above. The Apacer is the one that comes stock in the t5700 series

dims24,
You are very welcome Mike.
When you get it let me know what you think - but if they were not designed specifically for the HP Compaq Thin Clients I will eat my hat (if I wore a hat). Just too big a coincidence that every physical dimension matches the existing HP units.
I personally think that Apacer and HP must have had a falling out (you can't find a mention of the hp flash units on their site) and HP needed a new source. Also most big manufacturers like to always have a second source so they don't get caught with their pants down if one of their major components suppliers decides to go bust.

That is good news that they fit so well and thanks for the update. I suspected they would, but the proof is in the pudding (whatever that means). My 1gb will be here today, so it will go in my 5710 while my 5700 retains the 2gb CF.HolmanGT wrote:dims24,

5 t5700s Available on ebay - Found these on a search
First off, these are not mine and I don't know the seller. I was searching just to see what I could find and ran across this
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0234803695
$52.99 + $12.48 shipping (currently 5 available)
t5700 1GHz with 192mb flash and 256mb RAM, stand, but no power supply. While its technically will work for MJ with 192mb (after some file removal), I would suggest an upgrade. Please see the link in my signature for more details on HP thin client upgrades.
If all you want is 256MB flash, you might ask nicely and see if someone will sell you their 256mb flash module cheap after they upgraded.

And then the other 2 screws! Double DAAA!
And pinch the plastic white holder!

Thanks for the ebay link and other compliments. God I just love it when people say nice things about my posts (it happens so seldom)
On the power supply this guy it selling new units for $7 bucks and he has a gazillion of them.

No I have not found any 1 GB DDRs yet I was just logging on to go search. If I find any good deals you will be the first to know, but that sounds silly because you are the guy that always knows first anyway.
I do have one comment on the Transcend modules, the have a red led to indicate flash drive writes, that's OK but wait till you see the blue power on light. It makes the MagicJack blue light look like a dim star in the night sky. I am going to put the cover back on just as soon as I can get to it but my money says you will still be able to see some of the blue light leaking out thru the ventilation holes. Mostly just joking, these thing are so great and the price is so excellent I will never complain about the blue light again... OK so I lied, make sure you wear sunglasses when you first turn it on.
Quick comment on the form factor - these had to be made to HP specifications, there is no way in hell they just happened to come out with exactly the same footprint IMHO. And I noticed that HP is claiming two new Thin Client XPe(s) the T5730 in two flavors. first is a Dell kind of thing where you get on line and build one to your specs, the other is an assortment of preconfigured factory models (pick & Pay). As I said in another post these units seem faster to me, if it is really something that has been designed to support the two new HP products that may explain the footprint and the speed. The T5730 did exist previously but they were only XPce (yuk!).

Dims24, these things price and functionality are so cool that I almost feel like sending "Stroths" a thank you present - but I probably won't.
PS - now you can put the HP java on it and do all your MJ tuning and updates right on the thin client. By the way I used the latest Java from the 5710/20 download site and it handles the "MagicFIX" application just fine, maybe even better than my XP full laptops Java does, it is definitely faster than my laptop. Haven't quite figured out what makes these things so fast but IMHO they are rockets.
Oh did you notice that the Transcend flash drive seemed faster than the HP ones? Actually I should ask Stroths if his "Tiny XP" loaded faster than when he stuck it on the CF card.

Can't choose Telephone
Ok people need your help. I'm sure I missed a post somewhere so don't yell, but I can't choose the telephone on my MJ. The MJ seems to have loaded ok, I can pick up the receiver on my phone (no dial tone), dial on the phone, hear the ring on the TC and hear the other end pick up and talk. I am on a TC5710 1.2ghz 256/256. Please and thanks!!!

OK Then I take it that MJ installed and never asked for any additional driver it couldn't find and that you removed everything that the different post suggested you to remove.
I have never heard of this happing on a TC but there is always a first time for everything.
You did do a commit after installing and setting up MJ? Just real quick look in the control panel sound icon and make sure your default audio device is the sound card native to your T5710 for both sound playback and record for both the audio and voice tab. If not set them so do a commit and reboot even if the EWF does not offer to reboot (sometime it doesn't).
Let us know what happens and if you are not fixed we can always go to plan B.

I nixed the idea for TinyXP on the 1GB flash. The total install with IE is somewhere around 600mb I believe, but it needs more space for the temporary install files. Thus it exceeds 1gb and won't install. If I really wanted to play with it more, I could build my own install with nlite or install tinyxp on the 2gb, image it and copy it to the 1gb. However, I don't really feel like doing that now.
I just flashed the stock HP image onto it and did all the hacks. I also disabled a lot of the services I don't need (print spooler, dhcp client since I have a fixed IP, etc). I also setup the MJ to run as a service per the stick in the forum. I have the service set to interact with the desktop, so its got the advantages of a service but allows me to access the GUI as well.
I tried the magicfix and was able to get it to run like HolmanGT did, so that's pretty nice. I installed the .net from the HP site as well in case I need it.

stroths,
Sorry about the tinyXP not making it, but you have the XPe and it is not too lame.
Hey Mr. stroths did you notice any speed increase with the transcend unit?

Since I have 512MB RAM in mine, I set the ramdisk to 64mb. You definitely want to set it higher (at least temporarily) when installing things. I believe the Java is 5.x on HP's t5710 webpage. I installed it and had to increase my ramdrive first. When running the magicfix, I was prompted to install another Sun Java runtime which I believe was version 5 build 14.dims24 wrote:What about the "Ram Disk Manager"?
Would it help at all to increase that from 16mgs to say 32?
Also I'm getting a "Virtual memory low" sometimes. Any ideas...?
Oh yea.... what version of Java do we use for the TC?
Thanks,
Mike

It's hard to say if its faster or not than the stock. It does appear to be faster than the 133x CF I have though. I suspect its faster than the stock though due to the design improvements Transcend made.HolmanGT wrote:stroths,

Hey Mr. stroths did you notice any speed increase with the transcend unit?
Here is the Data Sheet for the Transcend series of this disk on module flash. Maybe someone can make something of it.

Holman so gald you here to help. After my first post here is what I did (BTW IT IS STILL NOT WORKING) (MJ is good it works on my main PC)
Reflash to last OS XPE
Log on as Admin
Remove items:
Net Messenger
Citrix
HP SAM
Media Player
Multiple Components 1&2
TeemNT
HP Sygate Security (stopping MJ from going out)
Fixed USB controller (per your post)
Default audio device is set on everything "ALI Audio wave"
I guess it it to plan b...still can't choose telephone.
ps. I do a commit on everything.
clinktd,
Boy all I can say is there alway has to be one stubborn unit in the group. As I said I have never heard of this on anything but Vista and since the new MJs came out just a couple of XP systems.
Give me a little time to work this out in my head. and try some simulation here.
For right now the only question I have is you did go into the HP Log on Manager and set it up to always boot up in Administrator Mode? If it is booting up in User mode and then you shift to Administrator mode I don't know what would happen but I don't think any thing would work correctly. Let me know on this one please.
PS - I just noticed something that I don't seem to remember doing.
Reflash to last OS XPE
Log on as Admin
Right here you should set the HP logon manager to always boot to Administrator and reboot before proceeding.
Remove items:
Net Messenger
Citrix
HP SAM
Media Player
Multiple Components 1&2 Now this is the item I don't remember ever removing. Give me a little more info on what removal tool does this?
TeemNT
HP Sygate Security (stopping MJ from going out) You are saying that you removed Sygate completely?
Fixed USB controller (per your post)
Default audio device is set on everything "ALI Audio wave"
If you ran the un-install tool that says "Remove Multiple components" it may have gone a "Utility too far". I don't know I I ever personally mentioned this utility but if I did I normally would have put a disclaimer along with it. I read thru the script and it seemed like it might be a little too much for what we are doing.
OK I just picked up this thip from DarkMan in another thread:
This is how he fixed his problem.

You may wish to do a search for a more definitive answer, but I solved the problem by going to the Device Manager and deleting a malfunctioning USB Device Controller. Not sure I'm putting that in exact terms but if you go to the Device Manager, you should be able to see it and it's labeled Tigerjet. Once I removed it and restarted my MJ, everything was fine.
PS: I got this from another user in the forum which is why I suggested doing a search. It may be explained better by the original poster.

OK I just picked up this thip from DarkMan in another thread:

clinktd,
Did you try the mjrecover tool? That worked for me but you have to have MJ softphone up and running when you use it.
When you go into options does it give you an option to "switch to headset"? If not, then you are in headset mode and your phone won't work. MJrecover tool can help here.
Also I have had some problems getting MJ to load properly because of low memory. Try closing Team viewer to save some memory and see if MJ installs better.
Also make sure the blue light is on in the MJ device. If the blue light isn't on, You have to get the softphone to load and do the MJrecover which will reflash the MJ. Then pull the MJ out and plug back in and the blue light should come on....then when the softphone loads, you should see the "switch to headphone" option in "options" and your phone should work.
These things helped me. Maybe somethng here will work for you.
Mike

First I would try Dims24's suggestions - they all sound good and he has been in your spot, bad for him good for you (maybe).clinktd wrote:Holman

Multiple Components - Picked up from "VanHam"
Sygate - Don't remember but thought I was supposed to
Did the DarkMan thing that did not work either

The Sygate is definitely something you want off your machine.
The "Remove Multiple" (if Dims24 suggestions don't get you going) may be the problem. I personally have never run that be cause in the script file it looked to me as though it might take something I didn't want it to. Like the the multimedia 1&2 you mentioned.
I know it is kind of a pain but if "Dims" suggestions don't work I would strongly suggest reflashing and doing everything you did last time EXCEPT the "Remove multiple components" and see what happens. My money is on your side - I just have never seen or heard of one of the thin clients behaving like yours.
PS - the memory that Dim mentioned when you have MJ plugged in and running how much ram do you have left. It should be in the order of 17 to 20 megs free. If you don't that could well be your problem.
Tell ya what reload the original firmware from HP and if you would like I will call you and we can walk thru the Hack Job together. That way we can both end up with egg on our faces.
Actually don't do anything just yet I forgot about the other information that you sent me. Give me a few minutes to recover from my yard work and I will give you a land line call. Go ahead and try Dims24's suggestion that will give me time to tend to business and then I will call you and. Have a Ball pien hammer at the ready.

Flashing image
dims24,
"An unexpected error occured while writing to the USB flash device.
Check to insure that the USB flash device is connected properly and is not write protected and that the device is of sufficient capacity to hold the recovery image and tools."
I'm using a 4GB Corsair Flash Voyager formatted Fat32 with no U3. From what I'm reading here it is the new type memory and the TC don't like it. Did you end up going to Staples and picking up a 1GB PNY stick as HolmanGT suggested? If not, what did you to get it to work?
EDIT: How about this? Walmart has Kingston DataTraveler I USB 2.0 , 1GB for $8.98...
thanks,
bill
I finally get time to start "testing" the CF option in a t5700 and I get stuck at step 3 with this error:Reflashing with the Latest Xpe Operating System
1) Download onto your desktop computer HP’s XPe factory image for T5710 (was SP36064.exe at the time of this writing). For the t5700 SP28963.exe
2) Connect your USB disk-on-key (DOK) (I used a 2Gb “Kingston Data Travler R101”) to a USB port on your desktop computer.
3) Execute the file you just downloaded somewhere on your desktop system and when it asks select “USB Format” and your USB DOK as the destination.

bneuman & Dims24,
I noticed today that Walmart is again selling the PNY units at a fairly modest price also Best Buy had a package of three each 2 GB PNY units for 35 rupees or there abouts.
PS - Best Buy also had 1 GB PC2700 SODIMMs for $59 dollars, a pretty good price considering they had 512s right next to them for $67 dollars.
I also know you can do a little better online but that is for people with patience - not my strong suit.
Also back on this compatibility issue - I worked with a guy that picked up some Lexar units at Wal-Mart and he cleaned and scrubbed of some security software they came with (they did not have U3) but no matter what he did they would not work correctly. He picked up a PNY and he was off to the races. I have no clue what or why. And I also have some SanDisk newer style 4 gigabytes and my Thing Clients knew something was plugged in, but no idea what it was. (???).
I never thought I would see the day that I would be sing praises to PNY.

Well I sent you a note so most of what I found has been covered but I did find the problem that Darkman mentioned about the broken device driver, but in attempting to fix it I hung the machine. We can correct that in the AM - Hell it is already AM, lets just say tomorrow. I thing we can make it work remotely it you have some time to - oops never mind you already said you didn't. Just reboot it for me and I will log back in and see what I and do - if not we still have plan B for Monday.clinktd wrote:Holman
