How to fix crackling audio, constant dinging sound

Post by netdata »

Note: Not to be confusing with the "beeping" problem.
Or No Audio problem.

This bug happens when you install MagicJack on a PC with NO SOUND DEVICE, and then install sound drivers after the fact.

The only solution is a format.

You woudn't think that would work, but I have verified it.

A friend of mine had this problem.

Here is the Problem in detail:

Friend reinstalled Windows XP
Forgot to install Sound Driver
Installed MagicJack
Installed Sound Driver

Symptoms:

Upon MagicJack Initializing, the device will cause a crackle/static noise
which can be heard over PC Speakers and/or Telephone device,
then additionally the Windows Exclamation WAV file starts to play
in a repeated loop. (Windows Error) Then it intermittently pauses
and resumes the constant cessation of dinging.

Fix:

Add the reg server and other server into your site privacy tab
Format the device

Follow the format instructions from MagicJack troubleshooting
guide precisely (or you will have one dead MJ)

This should fix 100% anybody who is having the same exact issue.

I haven't seen this topic discussed yet, so I thought I would post this.

Windows Update

Post by netdata »

It seems my friend's problem is back, after a Windows Update,
when he started his system again it is doing the same thing,
and now the format fix doesn't work either.

I submitted this as a bug to Magic Jacks main offices,
so we will see if it gets fixed in a future update.

For now, the fix may be to use a SP2 USB AUDIO driver,
I am trying to verify this fix works, I will post the results here
when I have the time.

I remember having this problem a good while back with a computer I was setting up, it used some AC 97 sound chip if I remember, and when using certain graphical intensive proggies the sound card would put out crackles and some burbling. I had used the drivers which came on the original mobo install disk and the problem was fixed when I went to the manufacturers website and downloaded new drivers for the sound chip. Not sure if you have tried this yet or if it will help but it might. Good luck.
