MJ to Asterisk using dongle question

Post by billgod »

I am trying to setup magic jack to asterisk with 2 computers. 1 linux with asterisk and an FXS card 1 pc with xp with the magic jack dongle. I tried just plugging a normal telephone cable in to the fxs and magic jack and it does not seem to work. I know this subject is all over the forums and I know I can get my sip info and just go right to magic jacks servers but I was trying to do this the "Honest" way. Is this even possible like this?

Ok I do have fxo.. just wasn't thinking right when I did this. So a zaptel setup with fxo should work properly?

Doing this right now with an older PIII 733 laptop, Windows XP Pro, the Magic Jack plugged in and running normally. The phone cord on the dongle goes to my FXO card on the asterisk server. Shortly that will be an FXO port on my new Adtran 600 :) Then into the T1 on the Asterisk server board.

I setup zaptel for fxs kewl start (Note you set zaptel opposite what it is).. Then setup the trunking etc as normal. Works great.

Save yourself hours/days of hassle. Turn the volume ALL the way up on the PC as well as within the MJ itself otherwise you will get varied forms of choppiness all over the place. The MJ uses a signal level trigger to determine whether to transmit voice or not. Annoying.

On the Asterisk side I then bump up +4 on the TX gain (sound leaving asterisk to mj/pstn) and -2 on the rx gain (sound incoming FROM MJ/pstn to asterisk) of the fxo card port and that helped to level things as well.

Set you MJ level in the software all the way, then play with the rx and tx levels in the zaptel config until you get the right volume levels.

One last thing. Turn off the sleep mode on the pc or you'll have to wake on the first call in or out. Even then sometimes it will miss the first digit after a while of idle when the screen goes blank..

Good luck!

Why use a FXO if you can register your MJ user and MJ Password in your Asterisk PBX with the MJMD5?

Magic Jack as my PSTN for an Asterisk test server

Post by reelbigfish »

I have a MJ and a working Astrisk server with some sip phones. I'd like to use the MJ account as PSTN provider for my Asterisk test box.

I've captured a Sniff of MJ but I'm not sure what I need and how to find it.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
