Hello,
Is there any way at all to use the MagicJack without a computer? I am unable to keep my computer on 24x7 and I usually turn off my computer during thunderstorms.
I thank you for your time and look forward to hearing from you.
With regards,
Shur

Hi, MJ needs high speed Internet also, do you turn off all your computer equipment during a thunderstorm including your modem (and router)? If so, the MJ won't work. If you leave your modem (and router on) maybe you can run MJ on a laptop running on batteries [edited, added: and wifi] during a storm. That way your laptop is isolated from any surges in the AC.Shur wrote:Hello,

If you otherwise turn off your computer say at night, then calls to your MJ number either will go to voicemail or be forwarded, depending on how you set up your MJ account. For your purposes maybe a cell phone?

The best you can do is forward to your cell phone when your computer is off or just turn off your computer and get your voicemails later. You can look into running a thin client computer if you like or try and get an invite to google voice and use their advanced options for screening calls forwarded to your cell phone if you want certain numbers blocked.
MJ without computer
No, it's not possible to run your MJ without a PC. But what I do is set my power settings so that the monitor and hard discs shut down,(it doesn't matter what time you set it to shut down, but also set the power to go on standby. The MJ DOES still work in that setting, so at least you're saving electricity while doing so. But I'd recommend restarting your PC at least once a day. That's what I've been doing all along, and it works fine.
I hope this helps.

A friend of mine found out the hard way that a battery won't always prevent a laptop from being fried after a voltage surge.tony wrote:If you leave your modem (and router on) maybe you can run MJ on a laptop running on batteries during a storm. Re: Is MagicJack without Computer possible?
Sorry, what I meant was to run the laptop on batteries only (not plugged into AC) during a storm, then it's totally isolated from line surges. I get 3-4.5 hrs on the laptop battery doing work, probably longer if just running MJ with screen off. That should get you through a storm. Agreed, if you are plugged into the AC, you risk a voltage surge frying your surge protector, your power adapter and your laptop.mel2000 wrote:A friend of mine found out the hard way that a battery won't always prevent a laptop from being fried after a voltage surge.tony wrote:If you leave your modem (and router on) maybe you can run MJ on a laptop running on batteries during a storm.
