Its out and I got an invite! IT IS FREAKIN AWSOME! Record calls at touch of a button and they transcribe your voice mail so you can read the agreeness of the caller that is trying to reach you and you can have it ring as many phones as you want... Its great when my cell is dead and im home! You can even block people numbers and set up a schedule of when you take calls

Dude you don't even know, you can even call out from the number. You can even set up call schedules and set up groups so you can make it so only your best friend or family can call you, so when your hung over no buddy bothers you or no wrong numbers. You can also block numbers... If I could I would have children with it hmmmm maybe ill try I hope I don't get electrocuted like I did with the magic jack

I have been enjoying Google Voice, as well it's previous version of Grand Central ever since it was released.

I use GV numbers for my home & work numbers, and love all of the features it offers, especially since it has always been free!

It's great now that MJ's voicemail can be turned off and use GV for it instead. Using the transfer option with MJ to GV I get eight rings on my home phone now with the option to transfer to my cell after four rings and still ring my home phone at the same time. It's nice having the ability to integrate the two now from both ends.

sabresfan- Can you elaborate on how you set that up? I just got my GV number and reading through the Get Started docs.

Go to this thread http://www.phoneservicesupport.com/disa ... t7044.html to get the directions for disabling your voicemail. I put my GV number at the top. Setup your GV number to ring your home and cell number and thats about it. If someone calls your MJ number it will ring four times then transfer to your GV number and ring four times there.

I'm using an ATA and can't get it to work. Whether I enter my MJ number or my Google Voice Number in the "Cfwd No Ans Dest:" field of the User1 tab, I get the following Ymax test message after the 4th or 5th ring "You have reached the YMAX communications test number. This call was successful." [NOTE: "Cfwd No Ans Delay" = 20 during these tests]

I changed the "Cfwd No Ans Delay" value to 30 and 60 to see what effect it would have. I now no longer hear the Ymax test message and now my MJ voicemail picks up after the 5th ring just like before. But the fifth ring comes pretty close after the 4th ring. I'd say the timing is more like 4 and a half rings, if that makes sense.

I put in a request for an invite and got one in about 10 days. This is going to be great to be able to integrate my mobile, MJ and GV into one system.

You gotta love Google!

I recommend going to GV home page and reading all the documentation on this FREE service.

From the reviews I read, Google Voice has some great features. However, if the Area Code that you need is NOT available from GV, then none of those features are going to do you a damn bit of good.

And, it appears if the Area Code you need is not available, it will not ever be available.

I'm happy for those who are getting to use GV, but there must be millions of others, like myself, that will never know because our area code will never be available.

Your comment makes me wonder how important a geographic area code is going to be in the future. They have become so prolific, it's almost impossible to know where the majority of calls come from, unless you do a search. With the advent of unlimited calling plans from most of the major providers, most of the economic advantage of local calling is gone.

My folks, who live in a small town in rural Missouri, recently added a second cell phone. (They abandoned their land line years ago.) They each have a different area code. Obviously, it's a personal decision to give up on Google Voice because you can't get a local area code, but based on the cost of entry, I would at least sign up. You could always forward your local numbers to it to enjoy some of the features.

I wonder if you could iterate, for me, some of those features that I would be missing, that would make it worth signing up for?

I can think of several local friends of mine and my doctor, my dentist, my lawyer, my banker and my insurance agent that would occasionally like to call me using their local line. Right now, since I can't use MJ or GV, they must call my cell phone. If I switched everything over to GV, and my area code is NOT available (like it isn't); then all of those folks would need to make a long distance call to contact me. And, I can't see any of them wanting to do that.

What am I missing here?

No one is here to convince you of anything. If you decide something that is free, and does offer features and convenience, is not worth signing up for, so be it.

The point is, that local calling plans, and (POTS) landlines in general, are going away relatively soon. Most people already don't worry about "toll" calls anymore, because they have a calling plan or cell phone that lets them call for free. VOIP, bundles with FIOS and cable, etc. are also contributing to making the term "domestic long distance" obsolete.

If you have a few cowboy friends stuck with a classic overpriced landline, and no cell, then that is unfortunate. I would not worry about your doctor, and lawyers, and such; they are big boys, and are used to making such calls for their businesses.
