Firewall and MJ Sofware Download; workaround?

Post by ddruck »

At work I am behind an immutable "firewall" that appears to allow simple internet browsing but blocks file downloading. Thus, although the MJ is recognized by WinXp thin client environment (when inserted into the thin client USB port), the MJ software & set-up is truncated.

Assuming that the communication ports for MJ Voip functionality are not also blocked in this environment, How might I establish and then run the MJ software from behind this firewall on an XP thin client? Can I carry the MJ files on a separate USB drive & establish softphone functionality? Any thoughts or guidance is most appreciated....

(Note: My purpose here is to be able to at least and first, demonstrate how ez and portable the MJ is behind this firewall, so the PowersthatBe can see the MJ (and it's needed open ports) as an alternative to the "indefinite" time line & cost for dropping a new physical 2 pair telephone line. I work within an ethernet enabled prison, literally. There are ethernet wired, thin client workstations, email access, but no phone - and no, I'm not an inmate or detainee (yet). Thanks!
Useability or Nonuseabiltiy? that is the question

Contact Mr. Heritage227 on this forum both he and his brother use thin net to run MJ and should be able to help you. They are not behind a corporate firewall but they know a lot about thin net.

If your firewall and thin client environment permits viewing Web pages that contain Java applets, try testing to Boston at http://www.testyourvoip.com/ . If the test executes but fails (even when it retries on a alternate port), then your firewall won't pass MJ voice traffic. If the test succeeds, try running magicjack.exe (with proper command line arguments) from another device. If that fails, you might be able to access the MJ server from an ATA or another softphone.

Thanks for the tips, will do. Hopefully, heritage227 will have some tips on first getting the MJ SW running off a USB drive on the thin client, etc.

I now this post is getting a little old and hopefully you have solved your problem. I have been playing with mine a lot lately and have picked up a few ideas.
You say the Firewall is grabbing you but it could also be something else.

During your install what kind of error message do you get when the install fails?

curiousgeorge,

I might have know it would be you that picked up on that little one-liner.

When I wrote it I thought about changing the wording or at least putting a disclaimer in the post, but I said to myself nah - no one will pickup the implication - Wrong, should have know better.

That's OK George, I will be watching your posts and if you leave an opening... well turn about is fair play.
