technical support

Post by newriverman »

I bought 5 Magic Jacks based STRICTLY on the bogus ads claiming the simplicity of using it as well as the "crystal clear" reception. Now I see, on this forum, fixes for "newbees, oldies, experienced Magic Jack users, etc. Its outrageous for someone like myself, injured in the war and having difficulty with basic commands, to be hoodwinked by the makers of the Magic Jack.

What are you having problems with regarding your MagicJacks?...
Perhaps someone here can help you with those problems. Many
have the MJs working well. I use two, and have been able to get
rid of my landlines for over a year now, saving over $700. That is
even with a much less-than-perfect Internet service and some
      old equipment.

If you tell me what's going on with your MJs, maybe I or someone else
on the forum can help you to get them to work as you wanted.
BTW, thanks for your service in the war, and for giving of yourself for
others. It's obvious by what's happening in our country these days
that too many don't have a clue what it takes to maintain our freedom.

I agree with vdot and there are many on this forum willing to help and have more knowledge about MJ than MJ Chat, and thank you for your service in the war, also I would like to add my 2 cents.

My brother and I were "lucky" if you want to call it that. We did not and do not have very many problems with MJ, he maintains 2 and I maintain 3 machines, and it's just like "advertised" for us. The only problem he had was going from his Vista laptop back to his XP desktop, he looked through the FAQ and found it was the software. He upgraded, and has not had a problem since. I have a connection problem sometimes, have to dial again about 1 out of 10 times. But MJ does not give a busy signal, it just drops to dial tone. So I am not sure if their line was busy or a MJ server overload, or even my DSL, since this only happens between 6-9pm GMT-5. My T-Mobile cell gives me more problems, dial twice half the time, dropped calls after a few minutes, etc. If I had to complain about something it would be that, but I also know, I'm in a kind of an in and out dead spot for their service.

I keep my machines "clean" with some of the basics, CCleaner, Registy Mechanic, Ultimate Defrag, MalwareBytes, Ad-Aware, McAfee (no "Backup Monitor" running), TUT, and USB Anti-Virus. I got infected with one of those USB viruses, at the time they were just annoying and not "dangerous", that can/has changed. And yes MJ can get infected with them, if it's USB and can write to it, it can get infected. Also no unnecessary apps in Startup and running in the background. I check for driver updates and make sure they are compatable with others, not install because its the latest, then wait for a problem to appear.

This should be "Common Knowledge", but many times it is overlooked. Adware, viruses, apps running in the background, auto updates trying to access the resources (CPU & memory, etc) all at once, "something" has to give. Then it is assumed its MJ, because we plugged it in and it does not work correctly.

By the way, service providers that supply modems and routers might not have them set to enable VoIP and servers. Found this out after several frustrating hours trying to get WHS online.

Another cause can be their Internet Service Provider messing around the service. I read somewhere that some of the "big" ones were trying to knock Vonage out of the game, so they can slip theirs in. A little shady, but still legal??? There are several sites to check your connection, I do this often and found my DSL fluctuates bad sometimes.

There are those that keep their machine "clean" and have the adequate internet access, voip priority, CPU, proper USB power, router, modem, etc set correctly, and no conflicts, but still have problems. I would say this IS a bad MJ, mass produced products have a percentage that come off the line bad or go bad shortly after put in service, even with good Quality Control.

When I first saw the infomercial, my thought was it is most likely useless and just a scammer gadget that would reside in my junk drawer, and didn't give it another thought. About a month later my brother said he went for it and was using it, claimed it worked great and puchased another one. Still the skeptic as I am, and a firm believer very few things are FREE or UNLIMITED without strings, thought he'll find out in a month or two it's junk. A few months later I asked about it to prove myself right, he said it's still working great, and if I wanted to try it he would let me borrow (I say borrow, more like an extended stay) his other one. So I did and to my surprise it did work great on all 3 machines I tested it on. But BEFORE I went and bought one, even after it was tested, I wanted to learn a little more about it. That is how I came across this Forum and many Blogs, and a new understanding of VoIP.

As far as the "Circus" like advertising, and questionable practices, which I no way agree with. I don't think my brother would have "fell" for it. And if all this was explained in detail, it would go from "Infomercial" to "Movie" and would have lost a majority of those that purchased it that have no problems.

Why is it that thousands of comments, posts, and blogs are of problems? Yet, millions were sold? After reading all the "Horror Stories", I almost convinced myself not to get one, and KNEW it worked!!!

OK, enough, my simple reply turned into an "Essay". Just want to add those not "techie" can benefit from this app. It finds processes running, startup, conflicts, and etc. Just highlight it and at the bottom it explains all about it in an easy to understand way.

The Ultimate Troubleshooter aka TUT at: http://www.answersthatwork.com/TUT_page ... mation.htm

Even if you are a "techie" it may just find something that was overlooked.

And vdot is working on an awesome app called MagicBeans® to enhance the use of MJ.
