Unplugging MJ device while up and running

Is there any harm in unplugging the MJ device while the computer is on and MJ is running? I would like to be able to put the computer in the sleep (standby) mode when not using it (and not worried about having the MJ phone operational).

If so, when I come out of the standby mode and plug in the MJ device, MJ will start up, right?

i am not positive but it shouldn't. tech support had me unplug it and plug it back in trying to get it to work again since i still cant connect.

That's what I do every day! I use the MJ strictly for outgoing calls. I unplug it every night and put my laptop into "Standby". In the morning, I wake the laptop and plug in the MJ. Works like a charm. I've been doing it since I got it a couple of months ago, with NO apparent harm.

First I tried unplugging the device while up and running. I was able to then hit the sleep button and the computer went into the sleep mode. When I "woke" it up, MJ was not running, and I clicked on the MJ desktop icon to start it.

So that procedure allows me to put the computer in standby when I'm not using it.

Then I found one better. Hit Ctrl/Alt/Delete and open the Task Manager. Click on MagicJack and hit "End Task". Then put the computer in standby. That works. When the computer comes out of standby, MJ is not running, so a double left click on the MJ Desktop Icon starts MJ.

I like using the Task Manager better than unplugging and replugging the device. Now I can control my computer the way I want, not the way MJ wants. This phone is only a secondary, backup line AFAIC and I only use it primarily for outgoing calls when I'm at the computer. So I don't need it on 24/7 or 16/7 but only for a few hours a day when my feet are under the keyboard.

Unplugging the mj is how Tech support says it should be shut down. They explicitly added that doing so doesn't harm anything, although how much they themselves know is debatable.

However if you're interested in creating a shortcut to shut it down see the posts here, which does the same thing as using the Task Manager, only quicker.

Very nice tip on the task kill. I would suggest doing it that way as opposed to unplugging it all the time. USB ports are pretty hardy but myself am concerned that it would be quite possible to wear out a USB port a little quicker than you might think.

You know how it is when you keep sticking something in a hole, after a while the hole doesn't fit as tight as it used to.
