New MJ User -- Questions?

Post by MJ.IN.NM »

I haven't installed the MJ yet because when I started the install I realized there are no area codes for my state (New Mexico). If people who don't have MJ call me from in-state, will they be charged long distance since I will have an area code from another state?

Also, it is possible for me to plug in the MJ and use it for outgoing long distance calls only, and keep my landline phone service for incoming calls?

Yes they will be charged, unless they use a service that has long distance included, e.g. most cell phone plans and most Internet phone services.

Sure, though you'll need to use separate phones, or get two-line phones. It's a good idea, because MJ (or any VoIP service) is not yet reliable enough to depend on in case of emergency. If you also use your MJ for outbound local calling, you may be able to save some money on your landline by switching to the minimum measured service, often called "low-use" or "lifeline". In most areas, this costs only about $12.00/mo., including the fees and taxes.

MJ-The best way around that problem is to do what me and alot of others had to do until MJ had local prefix's and area codes for us. Get a free number from Grand Central.com---you fill out a short app and they will contact you the next day, you pick any number you want from your own town, then have the MJ number forwarded to that new number and it will go through them and ring your MJ number. All calls are free for anyone local and the whole thing is free service for you. Then just keep checking the MJ prefix list of new numbers. They had me a new one in one week. You can switch numbers 1 time.
