newbie question

Post by farmgirl806 »

:?: I have ordered MJ but my area code is pending. I did live chat with support to ask what to do and she said I could use any area code and then change it later. I am not expecting to get incoming calls but want to use it for outgoing. Can someone explain how to use a distant area code. How does a person get a phone number ? I just don't understand that. Thanks

Nowadays, most phone services (such as cell service, VOIP) include free long distance so the cost of making long distance calls is the "same" as local calls. You could get a phone number (temporarily for now) with different area code (such as LA, Chicago, NY, etc) and use that to place outgoing call to your friends, families, or whoever. MagicJack allows its users to change the phone number once to a different number. So when your local area code becomes available, request a number change with tech chat.

When your MagicJack arrives, just plug it into the PC's USB port and MagicJack should be detected and automatically starts the installation process. It will ask you to register your physical address (for E911 service) and email address. You will be then asked to pick your new phone number from available area codes that MJ has. Just pick the area code that you like, either far away area code or nearby. MJ then will present to you available numbers within the selected area code for you to choose from. Pick one and you're in business :)

Does that answer your question?

Number Choice?

Post by johnatnro »

Just an FYI - When I got my MJ a couple weeks ago I was able to choose my area code, then a number was assigned. I was not given a list of available numbers to choose from.

Farmgirl-go to Grand Central and get a free local number, you pick it and then you give them your MJ number. Give people the Grand Central local number to call. It's free for you and them and until MJ gets your prefix use this one. All calls will go through Grand Cental and ring your MJ number-it's simple-you just fill out the form and they will contact you the next day.-http://www.grandcentral.com/home

As other users have said - you can pick any area code you want. Pick one that is easy to remember or pick one where someone you know lives - so that they can call you without long distance charges.

For outgoing calls - use the caller ID spoofer - then no one will see your MJ number on the caller ID, and you don't have to dial 1+area code.

I found using Grand Central an easy way to get a local number. As most of my incoming calls are local it only makes sense to have a local number to give out to people so they don't pay a toll to call me from across town. Mj will have your prefix eventually. Grand Central is free and you can have all other numbers go through it and ring your temp. MJ number.
