Can't get a dial tone at all

Post by fester »

I am running a Dell Optiplex GX150 running Windows XP, connected to broadband via a network cable to a Linksys router (WRT300N) connected to a Motorola SB5101 broadband modem. The MagicJack is plugged into the front USB jack via the short adapter that came with the magicJack. My phone is a Panasonic KX-FPG381 2.4GHz cordless phone/fax with 3 additional cordless handsets. I have made and received a few calls with the magicJack, then I lost my dial tone for about 5 minutes. I have Nero installed on my computer but I never use it because this computer was purchased only for the purpose of running my magicJack, I use a Mac as my main computer and have a Sony Vaio for traveling.

Now I have NO dial tone at all, I have:

1. Plugged the magicJack into all the USB ports on my computer.

2. Unplugged the MagicJack several times, letting the software start-up.

3. Restarted the computer.

4. Turned off the firewall.

5. Unplugged the phone cord, then plugged it back in.

6. Pressed "Flash" on the handset about 500 times.

7. Switched from phone to headset on the soft phone, and back to phone again still with no dial tone.

Please HEEEEELLLLP!

Does the MJ window pop up with "ready to call" showing?
If you dial a number first on the phone, and then hit dial, do the numbers transfer to the MJ window?

It does say ready to call, if I dial on the phone the numbers do not transfer to the MJ window.

If I switch to "Headset" and dial in the MJ window and then switch to phone the phone works, I just can't pick it up and dial because I have no dial tone.

Could you try a different phone? Does THAT phone work on a different line? If no, try another phone. If yes, check the cord; maybe a contact is bent such that it works on some connections and not on others. The fact that you can dial out points to either a problem in the phone, or the cord connecting it or possibily something in the MagicJack that is intermittent (since it worked previously). I suspect the phone, myself, since I had a problem with a new one I got just for MJ.

I would try a diff phone as well, also maybe try it with out the extension ( just plug the MJ directly into the pc ) .You may also try a diff usb jack as well.

plugged phone back into our land line - gets a dial tone right away.

Maybe a bad MJ?

Update:

I installed the MJ on my laptop - Sony Vaio VGN-SZ260P running Windows XP Pro, used new RJ11, new GE 5.8 GHz cordless phone - STILL NO DIAL TONE!

Another update:

After going through everything tech chat at MJ could throw at me ........ STILL no dial tone. Tech said they would escalate my problem to the next level. I hope sending me a new MJ is in there somewhere!

no dial tone fix

Post by bicnelli »

Ok I had the same problem no Dial tone. after 3 hours with tech support nothing. But I figured it out.

here it is.

Goto My computer you should have 2 drives of MagicJack.you can olny format one of them do it.
unplug your magicJack. Now go to "Start" in Windows and click on "run".
In there write regedit and press enter.
Now click on + sign next to HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE
Click on + sign next to SYSTEM
Click on + sign next to CurrentControlSet
Click on + sign next to Enum
Now find folder called USB. Right click on that and click on "Permissions". In permissions click on the check mark called "Allow" to the right of "Full Control".
Now click on + sign next to USB and then find the two folders called "Vid1307", right click on one at a time and select delete if you don't have these that is fine- skip it
Now click on - Sign next to USB
Right click on Folder called USBSTOR and allow permissions
Now click on + sign next to USBSTOR
Find the folders called "CdRom&Ven_YMAX&Prod_MagicJack&Rev" and "Disk&Ven_YMAX&Prod_MagicJack&Rev"
Right click on those one at a time and delete them
Now exit Regedit
goto http://members.driverguide.com/driver/d ... rid=926455
Download the Driver "dect-neutral-driver.zip"
Install driver then plug in MagicJack
Put email and password in you should be good to go.
Don't plug in phone untill all is installed!!!
You may need to run the Update.

Good luck
