No Need For A Thin Client or a Computer !!!

Post by ThisIsMyUserName »

Sometimes techno-geeks are too smart for their own good and suffer from tunnel vision. That is your situation if you are considering buying a thin client for your magicjack or worried about leaving a computer on for it. Take the side blinders off for a second and listen to this:

I can't imagine why anybody would waste their money on a Thin Client to run MagicJack when for about the cost of a TC you can own a NetTalk TK6000, which is just like a MagicJack except it can plug into a router, as well as a USB, so with NT's TK6k there is no need to leave a computer on or even have one for that matter! The $100 cost of the NetTalk TK6000 includes free calling for life with no renewal bills at all. I have been using both NT and MJ side-by-side for a while now and I think NT has a clearer more reliable call with no echoes and drop-outs (both parties can always hear each other too). My one year old MJ was just renewed for another 5 years if anyone wants it for cheap (send me a PM). I'll probably take the $ and buy a 2nd NT tk6k for my 2nd home and a 3rd one for travelling.

It's really a no brainer...NetTalk for your home plugged into the router and MagicJack for travelling with your portable notebook computer.

I am also running both and as it stands now the (my) TK6000 does not perform as well as my MJ. I can’t get a local number for the TK6000 yet and my TK6000 has a problem of stuttering i.e. sometimes I only hear every other word and the person on the other end complains of the same thing, also when I use my TK to call Alaska the call normally drops within 30 minuets.

As it stands now those are my only complaints. I am very computer/tech savvy and know how to set up networks and tweak routers. The tech support at TK6000 is aware of my problem and I am not the only one that is experiencing stuttering, they assure me they are working on it.

I really need a local number and I have family members in Alaska so at this point I rely more on my MJ as it performs flawlessly. Hopefully TK will get these problem areas fixed and if so Ill use my TK more since it requires no computer to run it.

I have owned a MJ for about 40 days now without any problems. I owned a TK6k for about 9 months, but just sent it back for refund. You see, I have actually had 3 of the TK units, each lasting a couple of months before failing. It does work for a while, then after a few weeks, people cannot call in or I cannot call out. There are a multitude of problems, which you can read about for yourself on their forum. It just seems to me that the MJ is a more mature product and has a lot less technical problems.

It is unfortunate that you had problems with your TK, but one man's anecdotal experience is hardly representative of what is typical.

Pointing at their OFFICIAL support forum as an indicator of what's wrong is humorously ironic, since you posted it in an MJ forum with almost 60,000 posts. Most threads here discuss problems people have experienced or are experiencing with their MJ. Where is MJ's official support forum?

I love my MJ, but that doesn't mean that there are not problems. The unfortunate achilles heel of MJ (management issues asisde) is that it relies on the customer's computer to operate. Many users simply don't bother to maintain their computers properly, or don't know how to. Sometimes, MJ is their own worst enemy with shoddy updates and shady changes to the service.

MJ is certainly more mature in terms of time on the market, but that doesn't mean they've used that time to their full advantage. If anything, they've squandered the time, to a certain extent. Instead of advancing the service and features, in some cases they've regressed.

Again, I am a MJ believer. For the most part, my MJ has functioned very reliably. MJ has even been much more reliable than my Verizon DSL service that it depends on to function. The value I've gotten from my MJ has far outweighed any complaints I may have. However, they are (needlessly?) leaving themselves exposed to competition.

Just one man's perspective.
