Quick Poll-Has Your MJ Been A Good Deal And Not Much Hastle?

Post by saxman »

How mcuh down time have you had with your phone? Mine has worked real good once I got it set up right and added a broadband booster to clear up the sound. The only small problem was no local prefix for the first week and getting a better sound on the phone. Both are fixed and this thing's working great. I do think they need to work on the voicemail feature. It's a mess to listen to on mine. The messages overlap and run into one another. How's your been working?

 I to have a broadband booster installed inline. I have had no down time or much problems. The booster was the best thing I bought to add on. :D

I agree-I've asked Dan, the owner if he might want to sell them in his store for dsl users to get better audio. He said it was a good idea so that may happen. I think that adding that small device could save his tech support people alot of time answering the same old questions about the sound.

as you might gather from a couple of posts i've made yesterday, my experience has been bad. mj took several attempts to install, in fact it wouldn't install without the upgrade.exe. i've tried several usb ports, uninstalled, reinstalled, etc etc. it is installed now.
- the headset wouldn't work without deleting several reg entries and reinstalling again.
- won't load at boot without making a dummy utscsi.exe file
- mj disables standby. rude. i had to make a . bat file to circumvent it.
- mj won't retain headset settings. defaults to telephone when it starts, and changes the sound card settings. i have two sound cards and want the headset to use one card. computer speakers the other.
- no exit function on icon or program
- the outlook addin is a joke. it does nothing. nothing. just sits there. i've installed it several times.
- tech chat is mostly useless. they give answers to questions that weren't asked, ask question that aren't on topic. it is clear that they are in a different country, don't really understand english, and know litle about computers or mj.
- i have had several promises of escalated techs getting in touch, so far i've not heard from them.

i think that mj might work fine, once you can get it installed, if you keep the computer running 24/7 and only use it with a telephone. but the software is crap.

so far the big items are the outlook integration, and retaining headset settings (and not defaulting to telephone when starting). if anyone can help rectify these items i might be encouraged to keep the mj. i am still in the 30 day trial.

saxman, if you speak to dan, maybe you can pass along my comments to him.

Quick Poll

In my opinion MagicJack is a great deal and it has not been any hassle for me. I was also fortunate enough to get my local area code and prefix (435)-705-XXXX, making it a local call for anyone in Saint George, UT 84790.

Mine was so hassle free that I purchased two additional units. One for my sister (Page, AZ) and one for my daughter (California City, CA). They both received theirs and installed them without help from me (a little rough on the ego). All three of us have been using them on a regular basis with "No Hassles" at all. My daughter after about a week of use canceled her long distance package/carrier.

Over the last two plus months all three of us are still feeling like thieves in the night making calls for free and not one of us would care to ever give it up (so hang in there MJ).

We have four in the immediate family. Two in Canada, one in the states and another one in the middle east.

All of them installed without any problems and have been used extensively to make calls to each other and also land lines within Canada/US/Australia and the UK.

Couldn't be happier with the product!

My MJ has worked great. No set up hassles or anything. Hope I'm not jinxing myself now! I didn't install a broadband booster for my DSL (yet), but did do the resistor deal and it either made a difference or I just wanted it to.

I agree with saxman, vociemail is a mess, I would like to be able to turn it off.

I'll be getting one for a relative this weekend.

so far, i've not been able to get it to work. Now, to be fair, i've only been able to spend about 3 hours ...got it in the mail about 3 days ago..(6 days from date of order..not bad!)....and i've not yet been able to try it on another computer...i've been very busy with other projects.
blue light comes on but the computer won't recognize magic jack...when i plug it in, I hear that "ding" that says something is plugged in..but nothing comes up..nothing on "my computer" and nothing in tool bar.
tech chat has had me remove musicchoice and all nero stuff. I feel we are making progress because at first the computer was freezing up when i plugged magic jack in...at least now i can plug it in and things don't freeze...i'm assuming removing the programs have helped.

So, while i can't say it's been trouble free, the jury is still out on how it will work. I am confident i will find out why it's not working on my computer with a lst resort of getting it replaced.

saxman: my report on contacting tech and dan by email: i emailed two techs, each about different issues, on wed. no response so far, today, saturday.

sent dan my review of mj issues. he asked me to call, i did and spoke with him a bit. he said that he would get back to me.

btw, my escalated tech issues, "response within 24-48 hours", from last weekend: no response so far.

i have heard from rikard bone this evening. he gave me the instructions for setting audio in control panel. i replied to him that, aside from mj not remembering to use headset (since phone is on even when mi is set to 'headphone' it makes sense to me to leave it set to headphone all the time, or at least be able to retain the setting), using audio settings for default headphone settngs in mj means that the computer speakers go through the headset, since they also follow the audio settings. i can change mj to use computer voice settings, but why should users have to go through that every time they start it?

i await his response.

Had my MJ for about two weeks. No problems setting it up on my desktop computer (XP SP2). Annoyed that town names for exchanges listed for my area on the MJ website were wrong and I got a LD exchange for my area twice (and can't change again). Frustrated that MJ will not allow me to put my computer in the standby mode unless I "End Task" the MJ app. The limited features, the bugs and downtime, and the cost of running a desktop 24/7 or even 16/7 precude using MJ as a primary line, but I'm happy to have it as a secondary, outgoing only line for $4/month for the first year and hopefully $2/mo for subsequent years.

I love it! MJ worked right out of the box; set up was simple and it works great, although folks on the other end have had some problems with echo or garbled reception.

I got the Hawking Broadband Booster. The tests on www.testyourvoip.com show I have an excellent connection but it didn't seem to change things. I'm using Verizon dsl on one machine and Verizon FIOS on another.

I did an online chat with customer support to change my number and it went through immediately. I did spend way too much time fooling around with the Caller ID Spoofer but it works perfectly.

RE: Outlook add-in... I may be in the minority, but for me it's all I need with MJ. I prefer keeping my MJ contacts independent of my Outlook contacts since a lot of who I have in Outlook are prospects that I will seldom call. Off topic, but the only thing I would like now is to be able to dial out from Grand Central without having to add a contact. (That's not possible, right?)

Much thanks to everyone in this group.

Outlook add-in is working; I'm using Outlook 2003. I didn't notice it immediately, but there is a little MJ icon in the upper left hand corner of the Outlook toolbar. It brings up a drop down list of numbers for the highlighted contact.

thank you darkman. thanks for the toolbar hint. now i see why mj toolbar doesn't work for me. i never use the contact list, or, when i do, i use it arranged by category, which makes finding a particular name very tedious. i type a name into the search box and outlook finds the contact for me. mj doesn't respond to that. in order to use the mj toolbar i would have to change how i view contacts, and how i have them sorted. plus, the drop down box (on my computer i have a whole toolbar, not just an icon) doesn't show which number is which, so for people with more that the 3 mj alloted choices there is no way to know which number is which. poor mj implementation.
