Registering MJ for 1st Time

I need to register my MJ for the first time, in a particular Ontario Canada area code.

As I understand it from what I read, when I install my MJ in my computer for the first time, and it begins the setup installation routine collecting my information etc., it will ask me for my choice of area code and if available, assign me a number on the area code I request.

However,if the area code I need is not available at that moment, can I halt the setup, back out and start from the beginning again another day and continue to do this until the area code I need becomes available again, or will I be forced into a choice that I do not want?

Correct, you don't commit to a number until the very end. You can see what's available. You know that there is a $10/year charge extra for CDN numbers?

I see you have a location in Mexico too, what are your plans for using the MJ? Cheap calls between Mexico and Ontario mostly? Maybe you don't need an Ontario number? To give you an example, I'm in Vancouver and have a US based MJ number. I can make free long distance to anywhere in Canada and the US. My relatives in the US city where I have the mj number can call me for free (a local call for them).

Yes, I know about the $10.00 charge.

We spend the winter here in an RV park on the Caribbean Sea just south of Playa Del Carmen. Lots of couples here from BC and other Canadian provinces.

We use Skype routinely which is by far the cheapest and most efficient way to call numbers in Canada and the USA. But nobody can call us except other Skypers so MJ is an attractive alternative.

So if I understand you correctly, I can back out of the registration process without creating an issue, and try again at another time.

I don't want to be trapped into choosing an area code that does not work for me.

It's been some time since I registered my MJ, maybe someone with more recent experience can confirm that you can quit the registration process without committing to a number.

I see the available Canadian area codes are listed at http://www.magicjack.com/9/areacodes.asp Is your locale in Ontario listed?

The $10/year is probably the cheapest way to go for your needs. The alternative is to subscribe to a voip service and get a DID number (a number for incoming calls) which forwards to your US based MJ. I'm using www.voip.ms, cost is either $1.99/month plus 1 cent/minute to forward calls to a US number or $5.99/month flat rate (max 3,500 minutes/month). A voip service may have a local area code if you are outside the major metro areas of Ontario.

Yes, you can just browse the area codes and prefix list; provided that you click the cancel button at the bottom of the screen, it does not charge you. I do this occasionally from the my.magicjack.com site just to see what's new and have never been charged.
