do i buy prepaid CC from MONEYMART for canadian number?

i need to do the $10.00 USD for my canadian number as i just bought and installed the magicjack.

so my options are to only get a prepaid credit card from moneymart here in canada, they have one that allows me to "top-up" the PREPAID CC to any ammount i wish.....


is this suitable in order to get my $10.00 canadian number?

i realize that its $10 USD and that there is like a $1 admin fee, so i'll just put $20.00 canadian on the card...

i've had the MJ for almost a week and not been able to use it.
i want to be able to do away with my cell phone so i need advice.

Don't know how it works for Canadian number. I just used my regular CC and bought minutes for Germany. When I get low, just add more $ to the account.

Maybe there's something magic about Canadian numbers???

Can you clarify whether a) you don't have a credit card, or b) you want to use a "disposable" credit card number because you don't want to use your existing credit card number?

which is why i need a prepaid CC
even if i did, i wouldnt use it as i heard stories that peoples CC were overcharged and such.

never trust a company that can take money from you without asking.

I saw them at one time, but in a recent search, I haven't been able to find a disposable or one-use credit cards available to Canadians. Canadian banks don't seem to offer them (anymore).

If Money Mart offers them, maybe that's your best bet?

yes I'm in the same boat as you I need to renew my MJ account but can't because I do not have a cc this issue makes me question the longevity of Magic Jack

I used a Vanilla pre paid gift mastercard from Petro Canada to purchase a magicjack online. There is a checkbox to click if you are using a gift card.

I would assume this would work for paying the extra 10 bucks for us Canucks. I will know in a few days when my magicjack arrives.

If you only want a temporary option for paying for MJ, then using a Mastercard gift card will do. Once its value is used, you can discard it.

However, these are among the worst cards to get since they really abuse your balance with excessive fees - they eat the money even if you don't use it!

Do not use prepaid cards unless you have no choice!

If you need a card for other purchases and you can't quality for a regular credit card, then I suggest a guaranteed credit card from your bank. Go talk to the bank and have them hold funds to secure a credit card for you. That will get you a card and help to improve your credit rating. It's like a prepaid in that you need money up front, but it's a real credit card with no usage restrictions and you can get a no fee card (unlike Capitol One which has annual fees). If you pay your bill monthly, you'll never pay a cent to the credit card company, and you'll eventually get your held funds back and earn a better credit rating.

If you don't have enough funds to secure the card, then take a look at the BMO prepaid Mastercard. I believe it has no fees for transactions, no monthly service fees, and no load fees. Most prepaid cards have fees that eat away your balance, and MoneyMart is among the worst for this with their high load fees. The BMO cards only fee is to get the card, then you load it with money and use it. As long as you don't abuse the card, you won't have any fees to deal with. But it also does nothing to improve your credit rating.

Any type of prepaid card should work online.

Just watch out for the usage, monthly, and load balance fees, that's where most prepaid cards make their money and take yours in the process!

it'll be another week or so untill i can get the BMO CC, should i just "accept" a USA number now, then swich to a canadian number once i get the BMO CC?

so i kinda need to make calls now with laptop...
i can still get people to call my cell, i just dont answer it and just use MJ to call them back, as with the USA number, i can only call them... if they try and call me, its long distance charges for them

Be cautious, others have posted here that once you get a US number, you can't switch to a Cdn number. You can only choose Cdn on your activation of a brand new MJ. I got my MJ long before the Cdn numbers became available so I don't have personal experience. Do a search for "canadian number" and see what pops up.

Be cautious, others have posted here that once you get a US number, you can't switch to a Cdn number. You can only choose Cdn on your activation of a brand new MJ. I got my MJ long before the Cdn numbers became available so I don't have personal experience. Do a search for "canadian number" and see what pops up.

That's right...you can't switch to a CDN number yet. You can only get a CDN number when registering a new MJ device.

However MJ support says they're looking to add the ability to change to a CDN number in the near future. That means you might be able to get a CDN number in a few weeks, or months, or years - MJ isn't known for quick changes so don't get your hopes up yet.
