Building intercom/buzzer does not work when MJ is connected

I wonder if anyone has a similar experience.

My apartment building has a buzzer system that uses the building's telephone wiring (i.e., the phone rings when someone buzzes my unit).

I connected a two-line RJ11 adapter to my phone so that one line goes to the wall phone line and the other to my MJ. With this setup, the phone only gives a short beep when someone buzzes. The short beep apparently doesn't equate to a ring since there's no connection (to the party buzzing) when the phone is picked up.

When the MJ is disconnected (i.e., direct line between wall phone outlet and phone), the phone rings fine (5 rings) when someone buzzes.

I'm wondering why having the MJ connected to the same phone "suppresses" calling/from our buzzer. And, is there a way to correct this other than hooking up a separate/independent phone to the wall phone outlet?

My guess would be the Buzzer system is not going to work as it should as long as you try and share the phone w/ the MJ and the telco line. Do you have more than 1 phone?
Would be best to have a separate phone for the MJ.

Or does this buzzer system allow you to set your phone # in to it? You could try using your MJ # instead of the Telco # and see what happens.

I would disconnect the MJ from the wall jack immediately. The MJ unit is not designed to receive ringing voltage through the RJ 11 connector. You risk blowing the MJ unit.

As the previous poster suggested, you should use a separate phone (or external ringer) for your door buzzer.

Thank you for the warning. I dug up another phone for my wall outlet. Just too bad b/c I was expecting I wouldn't have to have too many phones lying around.
