MJ Canadian Area Code - what did it cost you?

Post by RjG »

Searching for this info, the posts are varied, and a bit vague...

Did you pay the $40 for the MagicJack, then pay an additional $10 at registration time for the Canadian number?

For additional years, it's $30/yr instead of $20?

For the 5 year option, is that still $69.99?
Or is 5yr even available, after you registered?

Aiancris, I've had a US magicjack for a year and a half...
I know what they cost.

My question was specific, as the subject states,
for the current costs of a Canadian area code.

Yes, it's $39.95 to purchase and when registering you have to pay the extra $10 for a Canadian area code. I'm not sure how you pay for the 5 year option. I'd imagine you'll have to pay the extra $10 for each year all at once.

I've had a US number for 2 years and there still isn't the option to change to a Canadian number. I was told that it would be free back in Feb. 2008 and I now know that this is no longer true. Even changing US numbers for the first time isn't free anymore. It's now $4.95 to change the first time and then $10 afterward.

IF you have a MagicJack account with a CANADA area code, and you go to
http://my.magicjack.com and view your account, what do you see here?

It shows $19.95 for one year, but I didn't go to the next window just in case I had to renew for another year before I wanted to. I'll find out in January 2011. Frankly, either way if it's $19.95, or $29.95 for one year service, it's still a bargain.

Well, we are getting somewhere now. :-)

It's been stated it costs an extra $10 when you register for a Canada area code.

So far, there is no evidence that it's $10 extra per year...

The "extend by 1 year" is still $19.95

The "5 year license" is not available if you have a Canadian area code. (?)

Can anyone add to that, or is it accurate?

Here's a chat from a few weeks back. Carmen has stated that it's $10 per year for the Canadian area code.

As I've said before, it's ten bucks. Still a bargain. I'm not sure where you're going to get Canadian telephone service cheaper.

Because MJ support chat always tells the truth ;) right?
("engineers are working on it now" "Canadian number available any day now" "you can switch for free as soon as Canadian numbers are available" etc)

Seriously, this thread is all about facts...

If you paid $10 extra on registration, then that's true for sure.

If it says $19.95 for an extra year on the renewal screen, that appears to be a fact as well.

It's weird the 5 year option has disappeared completely for you though.

By the way Grrr, thanks for being the only Canadian to respond on this topic so far, I appreciate it :)

The 5 year option hasn't disappeared. I was in the one year mode and I was in the next window. I still have the five year option and it shows $69.95, or whatever it says. I'm just not going to make another cap for it.

OK : Facts for CANADIAN AREA CODE so far:

You can only get a Canada area code with a NEW MagicJack.

It costs an extra $10 when you register and get a Canada area code.

So far, there is no evidence that it's $10 extra per year...

The "extend by 1 year" is still $19.95

The "5 year license" is still $69.95

Just keeping the info together,
mesamagic wrote:...Just FYI, I just purchased a brand-new MJ dongle ( bought and activated last week ) and I had to pay one time only $10 extra for my Canadian/Toronto-based number ( 416-900-xxxx) at first registerring. Then another $69.99 for 5 yrs platinum plan extension and my MJ is good to go until Feb-2016 as my MJ account shown right after I made a payment. Sounds like us Canadians dont have to pay $10/year additional for Canadian numbers as we though. I will confirm this when my credit card statement comes in two weeks from now...

Please note that you need to pick a Canadian number when you register your MJ dongle at the first time or you might have no chance to come back and get it later, well maybe Dan will chance his policy later but Im not sure if it would happen and when...
I agree with everything he said.

I also got the $69.99 for 5 years option for my Edmonton/Canada number.
No extra $10 per year charge.

You have to click the gray box at the bottom of that screen.

There is a 1 year renewal option, but another sleazy magicJack trick is to use faded print for the option that will make them the least amount of money. (notice where red arrow is pointing, below)

That faded grey button is where is says, "Click here for:
Features - 911 Changes - International - Additional Years"
is where all your options are.

I suppose that depends on your point of view, if you plan on keeping your M.J.

They make quite a bit less if you get the 5 year option.

60 months for 70 bucks, tough to beat that.

I just want to chime in for some infos I got it yesterday.

I tried to renew my 01 yr old MJ with original US number, this time I changed to Canadian number. I got charged $19.99 01 yr renew plus $10 extra per year for picking CDN number, total $29.99/yr.

If you buy a new unit, pick a Canadian number at new registration, then you have to pay $10 one-time only for CDN number. After that, if you wish to put more extension years service ( 01 or 05 yrs ) simply go to your MJ account and add the plan you want to your account, and pay $19.99 per year ( or $69.99/5 years) SAME as US number, no extra charge $10 per year for CDN number ( Having a brand-new unit with improved chip is a plus )

If you renew your US number MJ, and wish to change to Canadian number now, you will have to pay $19.99 + $10 = $29.99 PER year for CDN number ( still keep your old unit, old chip)

To sum up, I would recommend to buy a new unit and pick your CDN number, it should be better in a long-term. You get cheaper service, lower chance of device's failures. And thats the different.

you should have also been charged the $4.95 to change the number from US to CDN, as it's not free either anymore....didn't you? I just did the change for a total of $14.95, then added the 5yr extension for $69....but I believe I will see a bill in a year from now for $10 and each year after that, but time will tell!

Just bought a magicjack in Boston last week. I registered online and paid the extra $10 for a Canadian number.
The $69.95 deal is available for 5 years but from what I read, the $10 for Canadian number is in addition to that and will be billed annually.

Majic Jack customer service

Post by fun2couple »

I am a Canadian, living in London, Ontario. I recently purchased the majic jack. I had no problems installing, nor have I any complaints about call quality. I have a NYC phone number. One thing that is not mentioned, or at least not where I have seen it...Canadians using an american number cannot call Canadian toll-free numbers.

My problems started when I tried to purchase a Canadian number, using my prepaid Visa card. I went through mymajicjack, using their online system to order.

I have been charged twice for the Canadian number...leaving me with a 32 cent balance, and still no Canadian number...and yes, it is $4.95 plus $10.00 for the Canadian number.

Upon contacting customer service (their joke of customer service, online support), I was told that they had no record of these transactions. (Never mind that I can provide their company information showing to whom the payment was made). I was told that I would be emailed by customer service...I obviously have not been. I was assured that their engineers are working hard on it (seems like a recurring theme...)

I was also told that since there was no record of an order, these pre-authorized amounts (as I was told) would be removed...and check back with them 3-5 days after receiving my statement...so it seems that I have to wait for up to a month to see what happens.

It seems that an honest company would be a little more proactive about customer service, and follow through on promises made.

I am quite seriously considering contacting the American IRS...it seems that the majic jack company charges quite a few credit cards without providing the service being paid for...I guess we'll see what happens...
