Preventing magicJack from creating shortcut on desktop

Post by CheeseKing »

Is there any way to prevent magicJack from creating a shortcut on the Windows desktop? It seems that if I delete it and restart my computer the blasted thing always comes back as soon as the softphone activates. I like to keep a clean desktop and I don't enjoy having this crappy-looking excuse for an icon there. It's an eyesore. I wish it was possible to use magicJack without that damnable softphone.

Drag it to the recycle bin and never reboot. Seriously, get a life. You've got a $20/year phone service and you're nit-picking about the desktop icon that you don't like??? Sigh....

NO SPLASH
Install Startup Control Panel then run the application.
You can find the link in the control panel, it will be called Startup.
I had to switch to classic view to find it.

After starting the program click on the HKCU / Run tab.
You need to uncheck cdloader which is what normally starts magicjack.
Next click on the HKLM / Run tab.
Right click anywhere in the box and select "New".
On the line for Program name you can type what you like.
I typed "Magicjack Quick Start" on mine.
On the line for the programs pathcut and paste the following:

"C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe" /foreground /scf _magicJackPersonalDataRoot "I:\magicJack"

Use everything including the quotes.
My magicjack's drive was letter I. If yours is different then change the "I" in the path to what ever your drive letter is.
If you don't know which drive is correct drive, right click on the drive and click explore. It will be the drive with the file that is named "do not use this drive". Then click OK.
Make sure you have a check in the box in front of the key you just created then click the "x" on the top right corner to close the program.

THATS IT!!!!!!
Reboot and see if it works for you.....
I'm using Windows XP. If you are using Vista then I believe the path will be slightly different. Do a search in the forum and you will find the correct path.
Enjoy the quicker startup.

The next time MJ does an update you will have to remove CDLOADER and delete the desktop icon again

Very welcome. I have been doing it this way since I got my MJ in Aug 2008. Works like a charm, until they send through an update. Then I do what I said and delete the cdloader and shortcut icon.
Here is the link to Mike Lin's Startup Control panel.

Let me know how you make out.

I knew you would like it. It is the only way I use my MJ.. Plus it seems to load faster this way as well..

Happy to have been of help.

I'm the troll? Ok fine, but at least I don't bitch about an icon on my desktop! I worry about call completion, voice quality, upgrades.....

You can worry about whatever you want, but unless you have something helpful to say, you can keep your smartass comments to yourself. I don't need your crap.

Thanks for posting this Joe!

As for hsweiss, hahaha, I can't believe that idiot is still on this forum. It must be the best (or first) thing he ever got. He has 500+ posts here, haha and all are just like above no doubt, and he says get a life? LMAO.

I came here a long time ago looking for a fix for this since the creaters of MJ can't seem to be able to have a simple option for a shortcut rather than do this crap. Thanks to peops like Joe mine is soon to be gone, thanks again. And for hsweiss,,, if your life is this pathetic to where all you do is jump on people that post legitimate questions, you really need to consider killing yourself. Seriously bud, you've hung here long enough, leave people alone.

Hmmm, it looks like maybe they updated their software. I no longer have a drive like I once did. I remember a specific drive like you said Joe where it said something like do not delete but it's no longer there so cannot continue with the instructions.

Why the hell, do they go out of their way to make this shortcut keep popping up? There is 0 reason for it. I've already told endless people how stupid it is and hope I cost them tons of sales. It's like they're going out of their way to tick people off. Oh well, I'm going on a year and hardly ever touch it anymore and will not be renewing, and yes "hsweiss", because of this. Again, there is no reason to do this but they chose to and choose to ignore everyone asking for them to knock it off or give a way to remove the dam thing.

Everytime they do a lucky you update you have to delete cdloader like you did the first time as it puts back the icon..
