Installing Magicjack I get a Driver Error
Installing Magicjack I get a Driver Error and the blue screen of death. The error I get is:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down.
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
If installing new hardware or software ask manufacture for any windows updates you might need.
*** STOP: 0X00000001 ((0X00000008,0X00000002,0X00000000,0XFBBF00FB)
*** USBSTR.SYS – Address FBBF00FB base at F8855000, DATASTAMP 41107B6C
Any help? I have uninstalled the MusicMatch Jukebox. I am running XP home SP2 with all updates. The only outboard gear I have is the LG DVD-DL USB drive and the DSL Hub.

I have been unable to get MagicJack to work at all. It crashes the computer (to a blue screen) every time.
Excerpts from my MagicJack help chat log looks like this:
MagicJack tech support chat, STARTED: 4/7/08 12:55PM CDT
Chat InformationPlease wait for a site operator to respond.
Chat InformationYou are now chatting with 'Geatano'
Geatano: Hello, how may I help you?
Elvis: Hi, I have been unable to get the MagicJack program to run. A few seconds after start up, it crashes the computer, producing a blue screen with the following error message:
Elvis: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Elvis: It does the same thing on two different computers
Geatano: One moment please...
Elvis: Both running Windows XP, new installs with no other software than what is installed by the OS installer (Windows itself, Internet Explorer, and Outlook Express)
Elvis: When I say "crash" I mean that it takes it to the blue screen with text, and the only way out is the manual reset button on the computer
Elvis: By the way, both of the two computers I tried are modern Dell Dimension PCs that came with Windows XP, and in the final configuration I tried, there were NO other USB devices plugged in. I also tried different USB ports, too.
Geatano: Does the blue light come on in the magicJack when plugged into USB port?
Elvis: Yes, the blue light comes on, and
Elvis: there is actually a dial tone on the phone, during the brief time while the MagicJack program is trying to start up, before it crashes the computer
Elvis: The "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" is the second line in the error message.
Farther down, is this: Technical Information: ** STOP: 0x0000001 (0x01000017, 0x01000002, 0x01000000, 0xF8589025)
Geatano: One moment please...
Elvis: *** USBPORT.SYS - Address F8589025 base at F8580000, DateStamp 3d6ddc31
Elvis: although that last line is not always the same
Geatano: Please plugged your Mj into USB port.
Elvis: It is plugged in now
Geatano: Please go to ‘My computer’ and locate the drive named Vista Only, Phone, or removable disk (make sure it is the magicJack drive). Right click that drive, click format, and click start. Unplug magicJack, wait 15 seconds, and plug magicJack back in. You will need to download the magicjack upgrade again.
Elvis: I will have to restart that computer first. Hang on...
Geatano: Please do the above step and try again..
Elvis: OK, other computer is back up...
Elvis: OK, it's starting to load the "MagicJack" program, and now it's showing the image of the MagicJack device on the screen
Elvis: It just crashed the computer again
Geatano: Ok, I am escalating your issue to our technical department ,they will contact you as soon as possible.
Elvis: This time the line at the bottom of the blue screen is *** kmixer.sys - Address EB9DB6C9 base at EB9DA000, DateStamp 3d6ddc1c
Geatano: ok
Geatano: I have escalated your issue.
Geatano: They will contact you as soon as possible.
Jbilliard, did you ever get your problem solved? Thus far, I have NOT.

To Posters 1 and 2,
This now makes the third person I have heard of having this problem.
What OS and Machine are you guys using. Also do you have one of the new MJ units or the older ones.
The only way to tell them apart that I know of is the back of my older unit is just plain silver, no printing, pictures or a place like credit cards have where you can write information with a ball-point and the newer units do have some of this sort of thing on the back at least the strip where you can write information. Sorry for being vague but I received this information second hand and in a conversation which treated the description as incidental to the main conversation.
I have ordered one of the new ones to see if they really perform better and just what exactly is causing the "Blue Screen of Death".
Anyway any information you guys can provide would be very much appreciated.
Regards,

HolmanGT, thanks for your reply.
The MagicJack is a newer one, I guess. I just got it last Friday. It has a printed label on the back, with mostly black print (including the words "Patent Pending & FCC#A921" and one line in red that says, "DO NOT PLUG INTO HUB - Plug directly into any USB port on your computer"
I tried the MagicJack on two different computers, with the same result. Both of the two computers I tried are modern Dell Dimension PCs (one is a 4500s, the other a 4550) that came with Windows XP.
As far as PCI cards, the 4500 has only a PCI ethernet card, and the 4550, which has built-in ethernet, has no PCI cards at all.
In the final configuration I tried, there were NO other USB devices plugged in. I also tried different USB ports, too
Both are running a newly installed Windows XP SP1, with no other software than what is installed by the OS installer (Windows itself, Internet Explorer, and Outlook Express). This is about as "plain vanilla" of a setup as I can imagine.

I believe that you need XP SP2 for best results. Is there a reason you aren't running SP2?Elvis_knows wrote: Both are running a newly installed Windows XP SP1, with no other software than what is installed by the OS installer (Windows itself, Internet Explorer, and Outlook Express). These opinions are strictly my own. However, if you really want them, we can negotiate.

Elvis_knows,
I am of the same mind as "dbarber", is there any reason you are nut running SP2? I thought I read that as a requirement for the MagicJack. Albeit the Thin Client we where trying to install on and getting essentially the same problem as you did have SP2.

Ditto the above; U need SP2 along with the 89 hotfixes issued to date post SP2. And are you running a firewall and decent anti virus utility? D you have antispyware aps and do you scan? Are your systems on autoupdate re MS?HolmanGT wrote:Elvis_knows,

You can get SP2 on Microsoft site, given it was not apparently including in your restore CD which I assume you have, do you?....they will also send it to you on CD for just the cost of shipping, but I would not wait.
Might also be a good idea to visit Trend Micro Housecall. Get one of their plug ins, let it scan yr system and choose for everything. This will take a while, be patient And if it finds anything....ulnike say Panda, yo can choose to let it try to remove those items.
But Housecall is a kinda of last resort, you really should have good protection apps, i.e., AVG free. Superantispy is excellent for malware. I have the pro version, but they offer a free one.
But first patch your operating system!

I did those clean, basic installs of Windows XP on the two different computers specifically for the purpose of testing Magicjack, from the Installer CD that came with the computers, which is XP SP1.
I did not do any upgrades, and there are no other software add-ons of any kind, no firewalls, no anti-spyware, etc., but I shouldn't need them either, since I tried Magicjack immediately after doing the clean installs.
I wasn't planning on investing any more time in those test setups than I had to (and I've wasted many hours already)
I did not update beyond SP1, because these were just test installs. If Magicjack requires XP SP2 or higher, they sure should say so on their website, and beyond that, the guy in tech support chat should have asked about that (which he did not do).
I normally run Windows 2000, which in addition to being easier to works with for backups and restores (I use drive Image for that), works just fine for everything else I use my computer for, including Skype, which I've used for over a year and is looking a lot better all the time, although it is true that having a phone number for incoming calls is far more expensive with Skype. That was one of the reasons I was willing to try Magicjack - it's $60/year just for a SkypeIn phone number.
Also, this drastically transcends the "3 simple steps" illustrated on the inside flap of the Magicjack package. It looks like the idea (as shown on the TV commercial) that you could take your Magicjack device with you and use it on any net-connected computer is far from reality.
If I go through even more trouble to get this "3 easy step" device to work at all, then maybe I will still have some of the qualitative problems others have described in this forum.

While I appreciate the suggestion, these were new, clean installs, that had not yet had any chance to get infected.Ariesjill wrote:Ditto the above; U need SP2 along with the 89 hotfixes issued to date post SP2. Sometimes we can employ mathematical probabilities to our detriment. I mean, OK< if I cross a Manhattan street in the middle of the block---forget while texting someone--- which I do mainly.....ergo.....we all know about Murphy's Law, right? I think Mr, Murphy was a terrible cynic myself. Who was Mr. Murphy? Not important.
As for your needing SP2 and all the post SP2 patches....trust me, you need them. Mr. Gates OSes & browsers are all SWISS CHEESE, ok? Infinite holes and vulnerabiliities. INFINITE. Go to MS updates, get Genine Advantage (assuming yr OS is legit, which is sounds like it is---both are), let them tell U which critical updates yr system needs and expand each one and read. You will never doubt the importance of this again.
A newly set up Windows-based computer can get infected in a nanosecond, OK? When I do new setup, I leave the resident XP firewall turned on as is the default setting (until I get the one I choose).....but I can not DOWNLOAD Avg FAST ENUFF Same deal with anti malware.
This is not about math or double blind studies....this is about the real cyber World which is an increasingly dangerous place. Be objective: your need for that which you do not have...has little to do with your MJ. these are musts, not some option....most copies of include sP2....and people go thru much trouble often if their copy doesn't have it to slipstream it. Not really necesary, you can easily get it.
Learning over time how to protect yr system is crucial and precludes bigtime PMS down the road, or, alost IMMEDIATELY. esp with broadband! I doubt anyone here would disagree. If you can find anyting on the net even suggesting obtusely you do not need these updates....I will buy you a Porsche. (Another lie.I am trying to get thu 2 U)
Why don't you visit Trend Micro Housecall and scan yr systems and see how clean they are? Infections do not operate like CS people, i.e., the system longest online next. Please believe this.
Why do you thinkl the databases of good protection apps update every day????? Let someone ELSE play russian Routlette.

Re "drastically transcends".....please loose the rigid, narrow models and be open; the MJ packaging was very carefully evolved and in every single element. It includes the most likely basics re troublshooting issues with the goal to cover most of the likely bases short of alienating consumers with a giant volume as per the MS Knowledge base. That is good marketing. But individual systems are just that....and yours is in harms' way. Please see things in perspective....you will not be sorry.
I think you are bringing the same mindset to MS patches/hotfixes as you are your MJ.
Please do not dismiss /judge things out of hand or arbitrarily or by some false measure!
See this, please accurately: you posted an issue with your MJ; in the process, you inadvertantly revealed a serious dearth of protection in your computers. It's a GIFT, THIS.

I got a crazy idea why not install sp2+updates(wich you need for MJ) and see if it works its very simple fix,why it makes a diffrence I do not know because I do not know enough about programing to answer this,I do know for a fact that if you run any xp with sp1 you are installing the worst possible OS and it will cause major problems(security, compatability, etc.)issues not only with MJ but overall.
help! I am running out of USB ports!!!!!!!!
Tell me, Mr. Anderson... what good is a phone call... if you're unable to speak?

I have solved my problem. I got an RMA and magicJack will soon be on its way back.
As for the lengthy post above by Ariesjill, the most succinct and polite response I can give is: "save the lecture for somebody else."
I have worked with both PCS and Macs longer than you've been alive, and am well aware of the problems you've described, and have no problem preventing them.
As I mentioned before, I don't normally use XP, so I have no other need for any of the XP SPs.
A quick check of all the other problems other people are having should make it pretty obvious that this product is a huge waste of time for far too many people.
The fact that this "Unofficial magicJack Forum" exists at all is testimony to that, much less that it is filled with so many posts.
Collectively, how many man-hours (years?) - that could have been used for far more productive things - have been expended so far?
Someday, maybe the mindset of the masses of home computer users will shift toward performing a cost-benefit analysis that gives serious consideration to how much their time is worth.

Let us know the outcome when yr new device arrives.

Given the premise of your differential take on the MJ and how it was evolved.... look at the average tech site. Hundreds of thousands of humans festeriing over infinite issues with WINDOWS. And yet MAC still comprises a small but burgeoning percentage of the marketplace.
Let us arrive at our ERGOS in perspective, yes?
Given the radical underlying concept of the MJ....that this commuinty right here is relatively small....speaks more perspective volumes.
that is my take and also my modus operanti for evolving truths in perspective.
I am neither cavalier or blindly loyal. If anything, I am the opposite. My fav quote from famous human which speaks the reality of my own personal journey is from Proust:
"The only real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes."

Though I thought it was clear, to put a point on it, there will be no replacement magicJack.Ariesjill wrote: Let us know the outcome when yr new device arrives.
I can keep a spare T-mobile To Go pre-paid phone active for as little as $10 per year (after the first $100 in airtime, which I already have). It's also actually possible to get almost 21 months for that first $100 in airtime by adding it in $25 increments, which are good for 90 days each, but when the third one is about to expire 270 days later, refilling with the fourth adds another year at that point (90 + 90 + 90 + 365 days for $100 this way).
After that, even $10 in additional airtime is good for 1 year.
That is a far simpler solution that works even without the computer on, and it also fit in my pocket.
It also works as advertised, too, unlike magicJack, which despite what some may think, is not so revolutionary.
Note that previous project that was Borislaw's original claim to fame is effectively no longer with us, due to having a price point that was unsustainable long term. That's likely to happen to this scheme too, when or if volume reaches a saturation point. The field is littered with the carcasses of those who've been down this same path. Like SunRocket, for instance, which I also returned for a refund (thankfully, since they went out of business before my 2 years initial service would have been up) because its audio quality was inferior to Skype.
By the way, "Ariesjill" the verbiage of your posts remind me of the speech made by the character "Meredith" near the end of the movie "Disclosure" to which the prospective investor replied something to the effect, 'Can you build the damn thing or not?'

Well, Elvis....I certainly never expected to uyote from my own post.....but you have managed to make a response within it!Elvis_knows wrote:Though I thought it was clear, to put a point on it, there will be no replacement magicJack.Ariesjill wrote: Let us know the outcome when yr new device arrives.

It is clear. Wasn't initially cause felt unimaginably premature, forget the patch issue. But now....like Stuben crystal. Clear.
Evah hear the aphorism about the baby and the bathwater? but it works back to seeing and identifying the "baby.'
We have free will....I always try to discern if I am manifesting that with all the real options & data or not.
This is yr choice and that is the end of the story.
Ciao.

Yes, you are clearly a cut to the chase human. For me, more's the pity.....bottom line, linear. For me, the joy is IN THE JOURNEY....FULLY OPEN.....and in the opposite of being goal-oriented. For me, it's not about simply getting it right....it's about making passionate, illuminated rich efforts....and harvesting the learning!
The journey for me is not some impediment to some goal, the journey is where all the goodies are... ONE REASON, I THINK i AM SUCH A LUMINOUS LITTLE BEING, at least by all accounts....tho I do always make the journey within. I find the joy & the fun even in the midst of PMS....as per the issue which lead me to this place re my own MJ issue....IRONICALLY, one which I realized THE PROBLEMS owned nothing whatsoever to my MJ (nor do I think yours did---the device employs WINDOWS DRIVERS....SYSTEM 32, HELLLLLOOO?)---tho that was kinda clear form jump......my issues owed to my OS installation in one of my three computers. See that? These data...forget all the accompanying goodies... could not have emerged.....had I forfeited all the goodies in the moment by being a CUT TO THE CHASE, get the wheeeeeels on the vehicle PERSON.
God save us from the sound bite sensibility; it takes us from behind the wheel of our vehicles and puts us not even in the passengers' seat, but in the trunk.
As for your hurling invective re relative experience....I admit mine doesn't compare with yours in duration. But Elvis, it ain't where you go....it's wut U bring and how U travel.
Forgive me, I don't know the film......but in this, it's moot. Obviously, the "prospective investor" character spoke your essence. Very Alpha male, yes? (Blech.) I am no way convinced it is a healthy or joyous...or even productive one. I never met a happy martinet.

Must be a Dell 4550 thing
Hi to both jbilliard and Elvis_knows,
My computer also crashes everytime I plug in the Magic jack.
I have a Dell 4550 with XP which shows to be running Windows service pack 2. I also have NERO and ROXIO so i guess i should not have even hoped my Magic jack would work.... (I understand MJ likes niether of these programs). But I did not get so far... my screen goes blue and there is a list of numbers at the bottom:
*** STOP: 0x000000c5 (0x00000010, oxooooooo2, 0x00000001, 0x80541059)
Not sure if the numbers are the same everytime... I just wrote down the last time (after 4-5 crashes). Different USB ports etc.
OH, well... maybe after a bit some of the bugs will be worked out and MJ will work on my computer someday... Just wanted you to know there is company in this room.
Alas, I WAS so excited...

StarGirl,
Things may not be a bleak as they appear. I have notice that there are some USB drivers that especially don't get along with MJ. I posted a method under the "Thin Client" thread that explains how to replace these unfriendly drivers with M$ generic drivers and it has yet to fail me. The M$ drivers work, MJ is happy working with them and all is Good.
If you can't find the post or you don't understand what I am saying in it (no big surprise there) let me know and I will attempt to walk you thru it. I know you are say well I don't have a "Thin Client" well this problem just showed itself first on a Thin Client but the PROBLEM is the USB drivers. Easy Fix and sure as hell worth the try. If you wait for MJ to fix it you will be to old to use a phone for anything but calling 911 and that has always been free (I think).

Wow....StarGirl=TOTAL DIVA....SHARP AND GENEROUS OF SPIRIT. wAAAAAAY!
I too now think these issues usually owe to driver conflicts---or, OK sometimes software, but also true these are not easy to troubleshoot. I also am popsitive that Nero is not the enemy of MJ.....cause when I did my clean install (blech), I loaded it (tho not Roxio) and there is no problem. Nor is there with Winmap.
Also, re the stop screens .they identify your specific problem, but in arcane code. I can not decode them. Cause I am NORMAL, ok? SERIOUSLY, THAT TAKES TRAINING.....BUT IF SOMEONE HERE CAN WALK u THRU UPLOADING THE minidump file Windows makes....and they can decode....then we will br able to nail yr specific conflict issue!
I mean THEY could. Bet Richard Bone could! He can do anything!!!! But also bet others are here who can read those minidump files. And stay away from MS knowledge base.....re your specific error....U could eaily loose yr mind.
Some things take real experts to decode.
