Call kept on breaking up

Post by camg042 »

Hi all,

Just purchased a MJ and installed it. I am getting the dial tone just fine. However, when I make an outgoing call, the first 10 second the call is clear, then I couldn't hear anything for a minute. It then comes back for a few seconds, and then I can't anything at all. I do have a router hooked up to my computer. Can anyone tell me what the problem is? TIA! Dave

Call breaking up is usually caused by "bad" internet connection (lag, delay, slow internet connection). Sometimes, it's caused by your own router, software/hardware firewall, proxy server. Try to do a VOIP call test here to see how your internet connection handle VOIP calls:

I did the test and I only score 1 out of 5. I have a cable modem hooked up to my router. How do I check my router to make sure it's not blocking magic jack? TIA

VOIP test score only 1 out of 5? Wow, it's very low and that explains why your calls are breaking up. Try to unplug the AC power of both your cable modem & router for at least 30 seconds. Then plug the AC back on. Wait for internet connection to be stable then try the test again. Some routers (and cable/DSL modems) need to to be power-cycled now and then to get back to a "healthy & fast" state.

I have opened up my ports on my Windows XP firewall for MJ. I also also opened up ports on my Belkins router for MJ. This seem to help a bit. I tested 2 calls, one to my wife in the other room on cell phone. I am able to hear her most of the time, call has statics but acceptable. I also call my mother's land line and the call is clear. She said she can hear me most of the time. However, her voice is cutting out for 30 seconds or so and then coming back....repeatedly.

Just now I unplugged the power cables on the cable modem and router and plugged it back after 1 minute. I tested the voip speed twice, and still only getting 1 out of 5. What should I try next? TIA Dave

Do you have any issue with internet browsing in general? What's the CPU usage during a MJ call? Try running XP's task manager & observe CPU % during a MJ call to see if your PC is struggling in handling the MJ call. I would also try to bypass the router, hook the PC directly to the cable modem to see if your Belkin router is the problem.

Your Internet connection is flaky, or it's being overloaded by unintended traffic (virus, worm, "guests " on your wireless router) or unexpected traffic, e.g. file shring. I did a ping -t to your 68.197.xx.xx IP and found periods of lost packets. I simultaneously pinged one of your neighbors on the same subnet -- no trouble.

Disconnect the router and test with one PC connected directly to modem. If low score, try again with a different PC. If both are bad, ask OOL to check your connection. For each of these tests, and when you reconnect the router, you'll need to cycle power on the cable modem, because it will be seeing a new MAC address each time.

Sometimes a bad RF coax cable connecting the cable modem to the wall jack is also to blame for poor internet connection or a bad cable modem itself. I have had cable modems to fail on me more than once.

Just received my MJ today {Tuesday} after I did those tweaks it's almost as good as my landline connection to be honest. No problems. I was able to plug it right into my Mac and it worked. For now I'm using a Bluetooth headset I had until my Jawbone and mini flip phone come in. Both were ebay buys. Also my local area code is available so the setup as I said was easy.

Don't forget that cable is shared. When all your neighbors are downloading . at the same time, your calls break up too. When mine gets bad, I can usually reboot my computer and the issue clears up. At peak times, however, there seems to be no solution even though I'm running 7 megs down and almost 1 meg up.
Windows Vista and Laptop with XP SP2 on the road. Occasionally, a Mac if my Windows machine isn't working.

OK I had clipping, AUDIO breaking up Problem that most people seem to have when running behind a router....
this is what I did to get it fixed....
1st I was lucky enough to have cat5 wire to this router... its also wireless but I am going to talk only about wire connection...
SO I bypassed the router and it worked fine.. Thus it has to be the router...
I was told to find and buy a network booster and well DANG it I got one and the same problem!!! SO what I did was....
Access my router with web browser, went into the security settings, turn off the firewall of the router....
did some calls and it was working FINE!!!!
SO I went back in and turn ON the firewall "of the router" again and (yes hit the SAVE each time you make the change... and everything is working fine now....
seems the booster needed to get some configuration I think .. or something.. well I just had 1 hour phone call to the East coast from West coast and not one lost word, noise, or anything..
I hope this helps..
so somethings to test is ALL routers have hardware firewalls.. YOU may have to open up ports in the UDP 5060 - 5070 and 80 in the TCP and 443.... if this didn't fix it TRY turning off the Router's firewall and save the settings wait a min and try MJ.. if this worked then you have some idea what need to be done...
GOOD LUCK...
