Local calls need to dial long distance.....
I just hooked up my magic jack, everything seems to be working pretty well with the exception of local callers having to dial `1`preceding my number. The magic jack number that I am set up with is local to these friends and family (some even in the same city as me), but when they try to call the magic jack number it is long distance. Any suggestions as to why and how I can fix this so it`s not long distance for them to call....
So I called the local phone company, and they tell me that the area code for the magic jack is a local (which I thought it was), and they suggested that it was probably 'the catch' and that is was going through magic jacks company and that it must be the way they've set it up. So, long story short, even if my neighour from half a block down tries to call me, and he has a different area code than me (even though the city has the 2 area codes, it's going to be a long distance call for him! I just don't get it!?! Anyone else have this issue or have any suggestions to correct this??? please!
It could be your neighbour's phone service that treats the other area code as long distance. Can you use another phone on another service (say cell phone or pay phone) to try calling your MJ number as as local call?
Could it be just bad luck that you are at a cutoff boundary between the two apparently local area codes? Try dialing your MJ number from other phones in the neighbourhood.
