Typically, the USPS provides two items of information when using tracking numbers. 1. The shipper has notified USPS electronically of an item for shipment. 2. The item has been delivered.

Very informative.

Nothing like FedEx or UPS where you can monitor the progress of a shipment as it moves across the U.S.

Thats correct I did pay a little more for Priority shipping but it was only $2.25 extra to ship both MJ's usps priority with tracking no#

Just FYI on that.

Hopefully I'll get my goods on Mon. or Tues or about and then once I set it up and test out I'll post back my evaluation.

I'm planning on replacing my Vonage phone with this and using it as my only phone once I test out properly.

Got my MJ today

Post by Agent_86 »

Well, thats was not too bad got the the 2) MJ's I ordered in quick enough time about 5 business days from my order date.

I can live with that, if that is normal for MJ

Anyhow I'm not sure I'll test it today because I was considering the electricity topic and considered using this old P3 laptop I have just for my phone service, which I have already converted the whole house to use my vonage phone service.

Basically I ran the one line from my vonage box down to the telephone service box outside of the house, and then unplugged all the telephone service lines coming into the box. Typically you can just unplug their RJ45 connections that come into the box but I wanted to be sure no stray voltage would effect my vonage phone service.
So now the whole house hare wireing is on Vonage.

So for MJ it should be easy to just unplug the phone line from the vonage box and plug into the MJ on the laptop, and then the whole house should be on the MJ phone service I hope (fingers crossed)

But the sad thing is my laptop only has 1 usb port for the MJ, and it also happens that this model has a NIC port connection but no circuit for this since it was options to get the modem, or the NIC or the combo modem/NIC circuit installed. Stupid huh ? Dell old inspiron 4000 which has the ports but only the modem is active.

So I've orders a pcmcia nic card so that I can access my internet service and utilize the MJ.

I'll post back once I get things hooked up.

I was considering just booting to windows on my linux box just to try out the MJ, but I didn't know if this would create any problem when moving it to another computer ?? does anyone know if this will be a problem if I move the MJ around from computer to computer ?

Happy phoning.

Got it hooked up and all works well

Post by Agent_86 »

I got my ethernet pcmcia card so now I can hook up my MJ to the laptop finally to test out my 2) new units.

To summerize:
  • I ordered 2)MJ's
    I received my MJ's
My laptop only has 1 USB port and no NIC, so I ordered a pcmcia ethernet card for the laptop
I received and installed my ethernet card
I've now plugged an MJ and restistered it.
I made some test calls and the quality appears to be as good as my Vonage service thus far
So after some further testing and reading the terms etc. I will most likely terminate my Vonage service.

I'll post back in a few.

Agent_86... I've used my MJ on three different computers, including a laptop connected to wifi at my home and at my office.

So far, I don't notice a difference on any of them. I would be curious, however, to know what your experience has been with Vonage, i.e., is it any better than MJ for $25/month?

Thanx...

PS, I *love* my MJ

Well I'm still testing things out and my recipients that I've called from MJ so far have said it sound good, no problems there, and my incoming calls appear to work well thus far.

I did have a slight outage only briefly but I believe that is due to the low resources on this old laptop that I'm using to run the MJ service.
It's a P3 800mhz dell inspiron 4000, but also only has 128mb ram.I wanted to try this just to see, and to save electric costs etc. I obtained this laptop for $30.00 so I figured I would use as a MJ device and not even use the laptop for anything else.
Anyhow when I noticed this outage there was no dial tone.I went to the laptop to find out what was wrong and I saw that some calls came in but it did not ring, and a screen was up telling me about some sort of out of memory etc.
I remembered that I never restarted the computer since I've registered and started running the MJ. I don't know why but I've always felt windows needs a restart after installing anything LOL.

So it's mostly like my own hardware problem low on resources and not the MJ that caused this.
I restarted the computer and MJ was working fine for the past 36hrs so far.
I talked to ebay support about a billing issue on the phone for about an hour or so, and no problems with my MJ connection etc.

My conclusion so far:
MJ is working the same as Vonage for me. Note I also have vonage currently.
Notice I've said for me ?

I realize that depending on peoples computers and internet connections that MJ could work differently for different people.
Also I'll bet anyone running Nortons or Mcafee will have problems. I say this because almost all my customers computer problems seem to go away when I uninstall Mcafee,Nortons etc. and install some other free antivirus protection. aka Avast.com etc. I don't know why but those others seem to bog down everything in my opinion.

So to conclude, I would say MJ quality is as good or the same as Vonage, which I'm very happy with Vonage I must say I've been using it as my only phone service for 3 years, and again I'm very happy with it.

But, I must also say that I am using comcast business internet, I have my own server setup and hosting my own images for ebay, and also my own webmail etc. and ftp sites for my users. So I'm using some bandwidth but not much.
Having said that I would guess the quality of my service with Vonage and MJ would probably be better then someone using Verizon dsl or something with a little lower upload speeds. And also depending on what other internet programs they are running.

I would also speculate that if they are running 4) different instant messenger programs and virus software and weather program and other junk that MJ would not work as well in my opinion, thats just my experience with computers and not MJ itself.

Anyhow currently I must say MJ is working as well as my Vonage thus far.

I'm planning on terminating my Vonage in the next week if the quality continues and using MJ as my only phone source.

I also recommend a battery backup running with my laptop, so that if electric goes out that you can run your phone for about 2hrs+ without an outage, and of course your router, and any dsl/cable modem you have running.

Well thats all I know I'll post back if I have any problems.

Happy phoning.

Status of my MJ

Post by Agent_86 »

Here is where i'm at thus far.

MJ working great regarding quality etc. on my cheap 800mhz p3 laptop with 128 ram.

I am however, having a problem with virtual memory page full.

This can be due to a memory leak in the MJ program or some other program running or just low resources and Windows is not managing the virtual memory page properly.

I've adjusted the virtual memory page from 192 with max of 384 which is what windows default created, and moved it to 256 with max of 512mb even though I only have 128 ram I figured increasing the virtual memory could fix this virtual memory full message.

I've restarted the pc again due to this message and no dial tone.
Note again this is my hardware problem and not the MJ causing this at least thats what I believe so far; and I don't believe the MJ program has a memory leak, however I'll keep watch on the resources to see if the virtual memory used continues to grow too much which would also cause the virtual memory page full message.

Anyhow I'll post back once I let it run for a day or so with my new changes.

It would be nice to know that people could buy an old laptop even without a batter or something with a small 1gb hard drive and 128 ram and actually have a phone system. with MJ@ 39 first year and @20 therafter and a cheap old laptop for about $30 to $50 or perhaps at the highest $125.00

Happy phoning to all.

My MJ status

Post by Agent_86 »

Hi all just checking in.

After changing my windows virtual memory paging and increased it a bit I no longer get the following message:(windows virtual memory page full)

This message most likely occurs due to my setup. Again a P3,128mb ram with winxp pro,
I have nice desktops and have no problem buying a newer laptop, but wanted to test out the MJ on an old computer since the point of all this is to save bucks anyhow.

So after making my adjustment to the windows virtual memory page and increasing it only slightly to 256, and 512max I am happy to announce that the system is stable and the MJ service it very very clear.

I'm only running virus software and the MJ on this old laptop and nothing else.

I do have cable which probably accounts for the excellent quality of MJ, but I'll test further and perhaps get a few friends to setup a laptop and MJ to test out as well.

I will be cancelling my Vonage service which I love and also works well, without fail for the last 3 years.

But I'm going to save a few more bucks per month and use the extra money to invest in something else.

I am interested in testing this with DSL also because I have cable business class I know my setup is very fast, and may not resemble what people are getting with dsl type internet connection.

I would not mind also testing with sprint high speed wireless that would be interesting also.

Well that concludes my evalutation of my received MJ's at this time I'll probably start another post regarding my reviews on a setup on dsl and wireless internet connections in the near future.

Keeping in mind that I will be using old laptops with only anti virus software running

Happy phoning.

Hi all

Magic Jack still running on this old laptop just great, got it setup to hybernate etc for low power consumption.

Just cancelled Vonage and now using Magic Jack as my only phone service

I noticed on occasion that when I make an outgoing call, I get a strange sort of intermittent audio, even before the call goes thru. Even the outgoing ring is intermittent, and then also the phone call, but then I can call the person back and it perfect.
This only happens sometimes, but if I hear the ring doing that, then I just end the call, and then try again.
I'm not sure why it does that ? it could be something to do with they hybernate mode of the computer perhaps it's just waking up the computer.

I'm not really sure, but it's only occassional and I can deal with it for the great savings. I can now invest my $32.00 per month aka $382 per year into an investment instead.

Thanks Magic Jack
