Local Numbers and switching your number

Post by RShea »

I have been using MagicJack for over 2 years now. Back in the time I signed up and visiting the web site they were stating that you could do 1 number change for free, after that there would be a charge. Seems somewhere along the line that has changed. Anyone know when this $4.95 fee for the 1st number change started?

If I do change my number I want a local number, but all that MagicJack web site lists is the area code. I did a chat with customer service (that is when I found out about the fee for switching) they stated that there was a local exchange prefix, but my research is that it is in fact still long distance calling (if someone else calls me back on the number) and all I am gaining is the same area code, nothing else.

Anyone have better info on cities or area code and exchanges offered besides the info on the "Official" site?

They changed it a few months ago.
I believe if you go to "change" your number you will be presented with a list of area codes and exchanges in that area code. At least that is how it used to be.
As long as you don't commit to changing it, it doesnt hurt to go look.

You can see them for yourself.

Just log-in to the portal, and "pretend" to change your number. You'll be able to see all the exchanges listed per area code.

You won't be charged for "pretending," as long as you don't complete the change. Just look, then close out or log-out, or cancel.
Enjoys a daily VOIP cocktail made from:

-One shot Magic Jack
-One shot TK6000
-One shot NetTalk Duo
-Two shots Ooma (it's bigger)

Shaken, not stirred.

Google Voice is the chaser.

Thanks for the info on trying with the site- it wants you to click on the I agree to the charge and was not sure when they did the billing. Obviously do not want to pay for it if it still is long distance and the chat person was not very helpful. I checked and it shows only an (814) 580 -xxxx for my city but I am showing other sites that this is in fact for a town over 180 miles away Altoona on much more reliable telephone exchange look up sites like FoneFinder.net

What happens when change number?

Post by Bay Moon »

Hey folks!

Does anyone know what happens on OUTGOING voicemail message if you change your mj phone number?

I use the standard mj outgoing voicemail message and do not personalize it...

I guess what I am really wondering is what happens to/with the old number?

I DON'T want one of those recordings on there that says something like... "this number has been changed... the new number is...."

Anyone have experience with this please? Thanks!

ALSO: HELPFUL SUGGESTION.. IF YOU CHANGE YOUR NUMBER, YOU SHOULD CHECK ALL YOUR VOICEMAILS/VOICE MAILBOX BEFORE CHANGING NUMBERS, OR YOU WILL LOSE THEM/LOSE ACCESS TO THEM!
