Surcharges?? Phone calls NOT free??

Post by fester »

I have a friend that bought a MagicJack, they had some questions and initiated a Tech Chat session. My friend was told that using the MJ is NOT free unless the person you are calling also has a MJ. They were told that surcharges will be charged to your credit card like you called a 1-900 number. My friend says she has the transcript of the chat session she is going to email it to me. She cancelled her MJ because of this.

Has anyone heard of this? Is it true that the calls are only free if you call another MJ user?

Not true at all. It's only true if the other party lives outside the US or Canada in that case yes you'd both need MJs. However IF the person calling you is in say another state and calls you long distance, THEY would incur long distance charges not you, unless they had an MJ too.

It's not true at all. MJ doesn't support reverse charging (900/976-xxxx) or operator (0, 00) services since there is no bill ever.

This is a perfect example of someone giving out misinformation. Your friend could not be more mistaken.
All calls are free UNLESS you are calling internationally. I find it hard to believe that tech chat told her that calls are only free if she is calling another magic jack. If she talked to tech chat for the right company, I'm willing to bet they told her that INTERNATIONAL calls are only free if you are calling another magic jack number.... no surcharges and they don't bill credit cards for minutes used. If someone wishes to purchase INTERNATIONAL minutes, they are prepaid. However, anyone that calls someone internationally can just purchase a 2nd magic jack for that person.

Please post her chat session when you get it. Someone, either your friend or a tech chatter has no idea what they are talking about. It would be good to find out which one that is.

Please read the terms closely and see the sections about what is free and what is not free

It is quite lengthy but worth reading if your concerned. And I would also agree that USA and Canada calls are free incoming and outbound to MJ,cell and landlines etc. Just FYI

I hope this helps

From their TOS:

"... the magicJack device allows you to make free outgoing calls to other magicJack device users located anywhere in the world, and the subscribers on traditional telephone networks or cellular networks in the United States."

In other words:

Any magicJack user can make free phone calls to any standard land line or cellular number in the U.S.

Any magicJack user can make free phone calls to any other magicJack user anywhere in the world where VOIP service is available, ie not blocked (China and certain middle east countries perhaps?)

They forgot to mention Canada. Maybe it was an oversite or the TOS was written before Canadian services were added...
