Error 20 (Please Connect to Internet)

Post by johnnyspork »

Now here's a frustrating anomaly... I spent 2.5 hours with MJ's joke of a tech support service yesterday and no one could fix this.. Here's the story:

My magicjack was working fine, then i shut down my computer for about 45 minutes, and when I rebooted, the loader kept saying "please insert magicjack into USB" so i formatted the jack and installed the upgrade as instructed by the MJ tech support folks. When I did, I got error 20.

Now, I'm running with no antivirus or firewall, and my computer is set up in my modem as the DMZ host, and just to be sure I've opened ports 5060-5070 as well.

when I double click the error message it says "defective jack please contact support"

Now here's the thing: none of my settings or configuration changed at all between when it worked and when it stopped working, so i figured the jack is just screwed up, however, MJ support is insisting there is something wrong with my connection and refuse to send me a replacement. Maybe the upgrade isnt compatible with my version of the jack? Oh, and I'm running Windows XP service pack 3 with the windows firewall disabled.

One more strange thing: It used to be listed as a TigerJet USB device, and now its listed as {UsbCombo HD USB Device)

any help would be greatly appreciated, as this magicjack is the primary phone in my household (because my landlord is cheap, lol).

Thanks for reading this if you made it this far!

(Edit: I'm on verizon dsl in Virginia, so obviously its not an issue of my isp blocking it)

Strange. Try it on a different computer/isp and you'll know for sure.

Then, if it still doesn't work, ask chatty support to be escalated beyond the first tier(if they refuse to replace it). If they still balk, buy your own replacement and save yourself the heartache. Just be sure to contact chatty support PRIOR to plugging in the new unit, so they can arrange to transfer your account to the new jack.

Many people have reported that, if you plug in the new MJ before contacting chatty, it's too late.
Enjoys a daily VOIP cocktail made from:

-One shot Magic Jack
-One shot TK6000
-One shot NetTalk Duo
-Two shots Ooma (it's bigger)

Shaken, not stirred.

yeah, i went through 5 different tiers of support, and the last one told me "im the highest level person you can speak with, and i cannot replace your jack, as the issue is with your connection", which i know is completely untrue. it obviously has to do with the fact that it died and lost all its files, as after i reformatted an installed the "upgrade" is when this happened. may try taking it to my GFs house tonight when i get off work and see if it works there, but i seriously doubt its an ISP issue.
