Preferred And Alternate DNS Server

I have a question about the Preferred DNS server. I searched here (and Google) but not understanding or getting an answer. I was instructed by magicJack customer support once when asking about calls not going through to change my DNS servers in my LAN settings. I did and it worked, that day, then it didn't work the next time.

My question (because I'm not sure I understand the whole DNS part) is does changing it in your network settings DO anything if you're using a DSL modem and router. The router is set to obtain it from the modem, and the modem is set to 0.0.0.0 which I'm thinking must mean to obtain it automatically. It's showing a "msy" (Mississippi) and BNA (Nashville) preferred and alternate if you look at the log. Should I continue trying the DNS settings from my LAN set up or change it in the modem and/or router?

I'm not sure why I keep screwing with all of this. I've pretty much decided it's more of a magicJack problem with their servers and equipment than me but...it's hard to stop testing different solutions.

Your network interface will use the settings it gets passed to it from your isp thru your router if you select the DHCP for DNS option. If you instead tell the interface to use specific DNS servers they will be used.

Thanks VaHam - are you from Virginia by any chance? That's where the telephone number I have trouble calling is at. My mother who has service with a small company in Highland County. I think it's a combination problem with magicJack servers and her phone company. I honestly don't have any trouble with any other calls.
