Post by maullah »

I have been scrathing my head trying to get this caller ID Spoof to work. But I still get my magic jack number when I call. This is what I did.

I edited my host file

then I downloaded Spoofing Proxy 1.1 and put my GC # and magicjack numbers. I restarted magic jack but when I call I still see my majic jack number. please someone help

I suspect that your MJ softphone is not talking to the Nashville proxy server, so putting that in the HOST file won't do you any good.

Early on, my MJ softphone was talking to Nashville proxy server, now it's talking to St.Louis proxy server. So use some network scanning program such as Wireshark and look for the actual MJ proxy server that your MJ softphone coomunicates with, then put that address in the HOST file to stop MJ softphone from contacting that server, and put its real IP into the spoofer then the spoofer will work.

Mine would not work until I added all these to the host file.

update--

Post by Bay Moon »

Okay.... I see that the list of addresses posted by fgrider is already in my spoofer's mj proxy list...

however... spoofer will not let me change the mj proxy IP as also suggested by fgrider.

would not let me change the local mj IP either...

Moreover.... I am getting an error message as soon as I open the CIDSpoofer program... (which is the overriding problem):

System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to path C:---yada yada--\hosts' is denied
then several "at System IO.Streamwriter" string path error message comments

Last at "CallerIDSpoof.MajicJackCIDSpoofForm.changeHostsFile(String proxy, Boolean Add)"

Can anyone advise please?

I need to make some phone calls but don't want to give out my phone number every time!

I am learning! Thanks!

The magicJack network prohibits the caller id number that is transmitted from being changed. There is however a reliable alternative solution.

You can use the Sipgate (Sipgate.com) network to complete your call. They allow you to change the caller id that is transmitted. Here's what you will need to set this up:

1. An account at Sipgate (http://www.sipgate.com).

2. Once the account is set up, login and set your caller id as needed.

3. Download and install the free X-Lite SIP dialer (Version 3.0) from http://www.counterpath.com/x-lite-download.html . Set up the X-Lite SIP dialer using the instructions provided by Sipgate.

4. Download and install the Xlitejack Plugin for magicJack at http://www.pcphonesoft.com .

5. To place calls via the Sipgate network when you want to change/block the caller id, just dial # followed by the number you wish to call.

If I may add one thing to redpepper's message. You need to "buy" a free number for the outgoing CID to work. Otherwise, the receiving party will just see a blocked or anonymous caller. The first level of support wasn't aware of this and I was informed when it was escalated.

Although you can get a free number, you have to click on the "Buy A Number" tab to get to it. It's a little confusing but it works and it's a great way to spoof your ID.

caller id blocking

Post by Bay Moon »

Thanks for the suggestions! and help!

re: redpepper's suggestion:

sipgate sign up first asks for cell phone number, which I do not have.

maybe I should enter the mj number...but then there is no option to select mj as "network operator."

I even tried entering an old cell number, but you must have active service to receive their "invitation code."

Dead end there.

what next?

Really? Skype requires this to send an SMS, but I don't recall seeing it on sipgate and I couldn't find where you needed a cell phone.

EDIT: Since I'm already signed up, I had to log out and go to the Registration screen. I see it now. I guess you do need a cell phone. Could you borrow someone else's to get started. I don't think it's used for anything after you register.

The above discussion is based on using a 3rd party service provider to make a call where a user defined caller-id appears on the far side device. It has nothing to do with using a MJ device. Calls made using a MJ device will ALWAYS connect to the farside device with the MJ caller-id number associated with the specific device.

In earlier times it WAS possible to modify the caller-id shown on the far side device when calling from MJ. Such manipulation of caller-id has not functioned for nearly 2 years.

IOW, fuggedaboutit

re: darkman

thanks... I reluctantly asked my housemate if I we could use his cell... but understandably does not want to use his cell phone for setting up the account--I wouldn't either!... as he just finally got some unauthorized billing (six month ongoing) problem resolved. So unless I could find some written/text agreement on the sip page.... I would not want to risk inconveniencing him or anyone else... thanks for trying...and for realizing that you were getting a diff. page... due to already having an account! :)

And I wonder why sip is asking for cell numbers? instead of just sending the code to an email address to verify?..... looks suspiciously like a way to start billing a cell phone number in the future? possibly?

besides.... if someone doesn't want to give out a mj number....certainly wouldn't want to give out one's cell .... and ironically... one of the marketing features of using sip is to get the caller id block feature.... ie... not give out your number!!!

please let's keep trying!

Re: GOOGLE VOICE possiblity

someone sent me this in private email....

I am going to look into it...

any comments?

re: Google Voice from private email:

"From what I understand MJ changed something on their end which no longer allows any of the spoofing programs to work, sorry.
HOWEVER I do understand if you have a Google Voice number and you call that number via your MJ and then from there press the #2 key and make the call via Google Voice your GV# will show up and not your MJ."

---------------------
Also re: crackerjack: thanks for your input...... I am just not ready to give up yet...but you guys are the experts....

I really do need to make some calls, Just moved, and am starting over, and this mj is my only phone right now to move forward...and since do not have the ability to block incoming calls either...it is important to block my number going out.... (TMI...but that is why it's so important!)

Any input on blocking incoming calls?

So Crackerjack-----do you have any input on the google voice scenario?

Thanks

I just learned that GrandCentral is now Google Voice....and I have not had either before...

found this re: researching Google Voice:

"As of September 15, 2009, GrandCentral has been shut down. People who use that website can still log into the site to retrieve old messages and data, but no new calls can be placed through the system. All GrandCentral users who haven't moved over to Google Voice are advised to do so now."

Google Voice is by invitation only... have asked for invite... am waiting for next step/reply...Google Voice says, "will send you an invite as they become available."

Does anyone have any idea how long it takes, generally speaking...? minutes or days?

Again, it is a given that you will never be able to directly manipulate the outbound CID of your MJ without 3rd party involvement. The CID for your mj line is hardwired on the MJ server side.

You can buy a gv invite on ebay for a buck or two but I don't think you can use an outgoing caller-id that you don't control. You must be able to answer and provide verification from the number you want to use for caller-id.

What exactly are you trying to do??

You can always use a service like spoofcard.com til you have a permanent fix.
There are any number of paygo SIP suppliers that will allow you some degree of CID control, some of whom will allow you one-off adhoc control so you can specify a different CID on every call. You will pay by the minute, however.
Good Luck

thanks crackerjack

I just want to be able to make some calls without giving out/showing my mj phone number or city.... ie, block caller id from identifying my outgoing calls.

the same way that *67 works on a cell or land line... like a private/unpublished number....

so some methods to accomplish that goal are to either block caller id, restrict my number, or spoof my number, or other... all methods/alternatives to NOT giving out my number on certain phone calls

The fact (?) that mj cannot block incoming calls makes this even more important.

I am just starting over in life (after a long foreclosure battle)...looking for jobs, learning a new city, living minimally, making lots of inquiries, meeting new people..... and want to protect my privacy in a safe way....and that also means that like so many people right now... don't have any/much money.... which is why I don't have cell or land line anymore....and trying to do this as cheaply as possible...

hope that helps you understand what I am trying to accomplish...and what you are trying to help me accomplish

I appreciate everyone's help Thanks

You could get a Google Voice number in a random area. You can make outgoing calls through Google Voice and your Google number will show up. However myself and others have noticed that MagicJack seems to have a hard time connecting to Google phone numbers. :/

Just an update here...

I have been waiting 11 days for my "requested" invite for Google Voice to try that option...

Still have not received it.

Any chance anyone has an extra one?

I did look at the website crackerjack suggested for free DID call forwarding... but I don't think there is any free option at that link that I could find.

Thanks.

Still not able to make "called id blocked" calls....

Sorry, that offer had a short shelf life. You can pick up a google voice invite on EBAY for about a buck if you get tired of waiting.

Hi Crackerjack!

Yep...thanks for the suggestion...and I don't mind spending the buck or two.... just that paying via ebay or online is not easy right now... and without going into specifics here...logistically would take long too to get $$ into paypal, etc! (of course now that several days have passed... the "hindsight" cliche applies!)

Thanks anyway!

There is also the matter that someone on another forum pointed out... maybe if people were not hoarding/scalping "free" invites... then there might be enough for the rest of the folks? So, as a matter of principle... not wanting to buy one on ebay...

Thanks again!

Hey everyone!

Success with Google Voice and Magic Jack!

Google voice allows you to both search and select your phone number from their bank of available numbers for FREE!

And the great news is that it works with magic jack! If I call google voice to place a call, and then press 2, dial the number...Or just call directly from the google voice webpage... BOTH show up as the google number on the called party's caller id...and NOT my magic jack number...

YAY!!!!

SO with all your help and persistence.... I am now able to make phone calls!

Thanks so much!

Perseverence pays off!

And it is great to get to know some nice folks!

Thanks again!

I'm looking into getting google voice number so i can forward some people to my mj number.

i have a question for someone that knows or remembers.
when you select a number, is there any area codes for canada?
on the google website it says "Google Voice is only available for sign up in the US"

does this mean i can only get US numbers, or i can only register from the US? what is required to sign up anyways for them to know where you are from? or they will strictly base this off of my mj number i will use to forward?

thanks!

Google Voice

Post by Bay Moon »

You have to have a Google email account set up. The info required for that is minimal and you don't have to use your real name.

If you have already received a G Voice invite (which is sent to your google email address), then click on the link to set up your phone number.

GV lets you try over and over what seems to be an infinite number of times, from their data base of reserved phone numbers--which is limited...so you could try the Canadian area codes... you could google a list of ALL canadian area codes and try from each one....if you are not able to find a number you want... you do not have to select your phone number at that time... just close out.... and you can come back later when you have decided on an area code. Just DON"T HIT CONTINUE in the phone number selection process until you are committed to that number!

There is no cost for setting this up at all (once you have already purchased and set up your MJ phone and internet)... so give it a try! Even if you don't get a Canadian number... you can use GVoice with ANY phone... MJ, landline, cell, etc. and can change which rings to what at any time...

I did not see anywhere where MJ phone setup info is shared, other than the number. It is not even distinguished as a MJ phone... you just enter your mj phone number and You decide how to designate it as whether "home phone," "mobile", etc.

Pretty Cool! Good Luck!

Not actually true. I don't have a Gmail account, and was still able to set up a GV account using my Yahoo mail account.
Enjoys a daily VOIP cocktail made from:

-One shot Magic Jack
-One shot TK6000
-One shot NetTalk Duo
-Two shots Ooma (it's bigger)

Shaken, not stirred.

Google Voice is the chaser.

Google Voice with MJ

Post by Bay Moon »

RE: having to have a google email account...to set up google voice...

Sorry about the mistake! if I am indeed mistaken...I had considered that having a gmail might facilitate getting an invite faster... as it turns out... still had to get an invite from a generous soul/third party... and not directly from Google! Google never responded to my request and still hasn't... not even to say you are in line or time frame or anything.

Also since my Yahoo is my MAIN email... I found it advantageous to set up a gmail account for several reasons just for GVoice! and also as a trial for this process...

Afterall, It is a learning process! and things are continously changing.

What is important is Getting it [information] right... not Being right!
I hope the rest of what I shared about my experience setting up Google Voice is helpful.

Let's keep sharing our experiences and knowledge!

Thanks.
