MagicJack with Linksys PAP2-NA
Hello all,
I've been using Magic Jack with the USB dongle for a few months now and would like to have a more reliable solution and then read about it being used with the Linksys PAP2-NA device. I had some questions about this and was hoping they could be answered on this forum as this forum seems to be filled with experts. Some questions I had were:
-Is using MagicJack with a third-party device such as the Linksys PAP2-NA more reliable?
-I read that we need to find our username/password (SIP), is this something that is ongoing (ie. me needing to update the system every week or two)? I'm asking because I want something that requires minimal maintenance. I read about the automated SIP finder somewhere, is that useful?
-The reason I want to get this device is to reduce downtime and maintenance, is this something that can be achieved with the linksys pap2-na or am I looking at more maintenance with it?
-Will this device (http://cgi.ebay.ca/NEW-Unlocked-Linksys ... 3a5b022999) work with MagicJack?
-I plan on turning off my PC and using my WRT54GL router on which I will run the MJPROXY, is this the most up-to-date tutorial for it? http://www.phoneservicesupport.com/stro ... t4230.html
-Is this the best tutorial for the Linksys PAP2-NA device to configure it with? http://www.phoneservicesupport.com/magi ... t5066.html (If not please link me to a better one)
-Right now I have magicfeatures installed which gives me extra features on MagicJack like caller ID and call blocking, etc. Can all of these be achieved with the PAP2?
Thanks in advance guys, I would really appreciate it if someone or a few people could answer my above questions.

DO NOT buy a PAP2T-NA from ebay, especially from those HK suppliers!!! They are no good and prone to premature failures.
I think the use of MJ with a ATA is more reliable and of course does not require you PC to be on 24/7.
I find this thread to be very help in getting your SIP credentials:

Thanks for letting me know, where would be a good place to get the PAP2 device?
I plan on turning the PC off completely and running MJProxy on the WRT54GL router, will I require regular maintenance? If so how often?
The thread you showed me is the one I was talking about in regards to the automated SIP finder, I suppose it works well?

I have the best quality and no maintenance with spa2102 ( same as pap2 ) with wrt54gl (DDWrt) running mjproxy. The only thing i do which is not necessary is that i restart my spa2102 using my phone my dialing ****732668# usually almost every second day. I also have qos setup on my spa2102 port and on my spa2102 ip. I recommend to get qos it helps the most. Had this setup for about 2 months now and never had to restart the router. Also I have never had any problems with sending or receiving fax.
I bought my spa2102 used from a local person on kijiji and a wrt54gl from newegg.

Very interesting, I did not see anyone else using SPA2102, do I follow the same tutorial as the PAP2 to set it up considering they're both Linksys? Also is PAP2 a newer model compared to SPA2102? Lastly, is the most common maintenance procedure with ATA is finding the SIP and inserting it every couple of months (since MJ changes their algorithms)?mastdesi wrote:I have the best quality and no maintenance with spa2102 ( same as pap2 ) with wrt54gl (DDWrt) running mjproxy. Yes you follow the same guide as pap2.
I dont know if pap2 is new but i know that pap2 is just voip adapter while spa2102 is a router and a adapter but i dont use it as a router so basically i am using half what it has.
My sip info has not changed yet. I dont now if it changes that often for everyone. ( i have no idea since i never experienced it )

I buy all my VOIP ATAs from Amazon. I'm saving so much from using MJ and other VOIP providers that I choose not to skim on my equipment.mastdesi wrote:I have the best quality and no maintenance with spa2102 ( same as pap2 ) with wrt54gl (DDWrt) running mjproxy. My favorite adapter is the SPA-3102 since it allows me to hook-up a standard POTS line to the "LINE" Port and my MJ on the "PHONE/LINE 1" Port. It also allow me to setup up to four (4) other Outgoing only providers. I use these for my international calls with inexpensive VOIP providers that allow outgoing calls without being registered to their servers. The SPA-3102, like the spa-2102 also has the T.38 Fax Codec!!
Same here. Bought from eBay and it went bad after 6 months. Now negotiating hard to have them pay the shipping costs back to China! for an exchange.
Also,
Could you give few names of cheap international VOIP companies. MJ is quite expensive when it comes to calling cell international numbers.
Thanks,
PS my MJ on PAP2T / WRT54Gv8.2/ddwrt/MJMD5, works great since more than a year w/o maintenance or shutdown

You are probably more luckier than most, since you got six months of use. These units are considered fake unit since the unit MAC address does not correspond to the original MAC address of the unit and in most cases are not Cisco MACs. Also, these units was destined for destruction and was poorly resurrected. If you open one of these units you would be surprise at the quality of the soldering and burnt components/board! If you can get you money back from the supplier, you will be better off. These units are pure junk!!stav wrote:Same here. Bought from eBay and it went bad after 6 months. In terms of inexpensive VOIP providers; I use Future-Nine and Callwithus. I believe LocalPhone has good international rates, but I have not used them or any of the Betamax VOIP outfits.
You are right, take your money and run, waiting for the company to answer back my email and then I'll decide.Everton wrote:You are probably more luckier than most, since you got six months of use. I found callwithus have the best international prices for europe cells and I'm testing them right now.

So far in over two years my passwords have not changed. The process is not as automated as it once was but passwords can be found using http://magicjackhacks.net/index.php?opt ... &Itemid=69Dynamito wrote:-I read that we need to find our username/password (SIP), is this something that is ongoing (ie. me needing to update the system every week or two)? Yes using a ATA is more reliable than using the MJ dongle.Dynamito wrote:-The reason I want to get this device is to reduce downtime and maintenance, is this something that can be achieved with the linksys pap2-na or am I looking at more maintenance with it?
I agree with others to stay clear of the eBay knockoffs from China. You can find reasonably priced ATA from http://www.telephonydepot.com/Catalog/C ... g-Adapters. The PAP2 does not include a router. If your using a wired connection to a PC near where you want to locate your handset base unit or fax then using an ATA which includes a router can be handy; since all you have to do is plug the CAT5 cable now feeding your PC into the ATA (2102 or 3102) and then plug the PC into the outgoing jack on the ATA's router port. It make cabling simply!Dynamito wrote:-Will this device (http://cgi.ebay.ca/NEW-Unlocked-Linksys ... 3a5b022999) work with MagicJack?
As I said above I prefer the 2102 or the 3102 because of their routers. The 3102 does add the POTS (and is a safer approach for 911 etc.) but only has one FXS port out so you can only attach one phone base or fax to it. If your going to be locating the handset base near your router where you can just plug the ATA into your router then the PAP2 may be your best choice since it is a newer design.
I can't comment on the tutorial since I don't run the proxy but many here do so I am sure that info is in the thread.Dynamito wrote:-I plan on turning off my PC and using my WRT54GL router on which I will run the MJPROXY, is this the most up-to-date tutorial for it? http://www.phoneservicesupport.com/stro ... t4230.html
I can't say if it is the best but I beleive others have gotten their systems working using it.Dynamito wrote:-Is this the best tutorial for the Linksys PAP2-NA device to configure it with? http://www.phoneservicesupport.com/magi ... t5066.html (If not please link me to a better one)
Probably not.Dynamito wrote:-Right now I have magicfeatures installed which gives me extra features on MagicJack like caller ID and call blocking, etc. Can all of these be achieved with the PAP2?
Best of luck to you and do post back and let us know how you made out!Dynamito wrote:Thanks in advance guys, I would really appreciate it if someone or a few people could answer my above questions.

Adding to this, I would say that MJ has considerably improved the quality of sound with their USB dongle. No comparison with the first days quality with the usual echo, cut-offs and such. I'm using the dongle with one of my MJ lines (have 3) and it quality of sound is as good as with the PAP2T. Of course in this case you would need to have a PC/Laptop/TC dedicated to this.

Yes, you can get SIP credentials, but those credentials do not allow you to use an ATA or another softphone with your mJ account. Apparently mJ is doing some new type of authentication in loo of or along with the standard SIP stuff. So even if you get your SIP info you will not be able to use another device or software, you can not even use the mJ softphone without the dongle anymore.Tribute3 wrote:Hello everyone,
