fix mj vista sp1

fix mj vista sp1
although I've successfully installed -- and used -- majicjack on several vista and xp machines, I hit a brick wall trying to get it to work with a vista machine that had sp1 recently installed.
to make a long story short: i reinstalled the pre-sp1 vista from an acronis image.
installed mj (no problem).
then did sp1 (no problem).
morale of the story: install mj before you install vista sp1.
cheers.

Your right, magicjack won't install on my new computer (vista sp1 pre-installed). Tried everything including the fixit and upgrade, but all the computer sees is a hub and installs the generic drivers for it. Of course tech support is no help and no there is no roxio, musicmatch or similar installed

Re: fix mj vista sp1
Just out of curiosity, has anyone out there been able to install magicjack after vista sp1 upgrade that didn't have it on their system before sp1?
And yes I am still waiting for my trouble report to be addressed from mj tech support, so far no escalation emails from them received. Think they just blew me off last week.

I'm not 100% sure of my timing, since I got both my MJ and downloaded Vista SP-1 onto my HP laptop in the last two weeks pr so, but I think I had SP-1 installed before receiving and installing my MJ on/about 3/25. It does work fine on that computer, so I think the post-Vista SP-1 problem didn't affect me.
Is there any way I can check on my computer to see when I downloaded and installed SP-1? That would help cement the answer.

The answer is yes, it can be done. You have to install it will full administrative rights. My suggestion: log in as Administrator, not under a user name, on the PC, and install MJ to test if it will work.
IF it does, add your normal user to the local Administrators group. To do so:
- Click on the Start or Vista button
- right-click on Computer in the Start menu
- left-click on Manage
- expand Local Users and Groups
- left-click on Users
- find your user name, and right-click it to select Properties
- click the Member Of tab. If you do not see Administrators on this tab, that account does NOT have administrative rights and under Vista, will make you pull your hair out when you insert USB devices. To add your account to the Administrators group:
- click the Add button
- in the Select Groups sheet that opens, enter the object name Administrators and click Check Names. The entry you typed in will underline if you spelled it correctly.
-click OK. Click OK on the user account properties sheet. Close Computer Management window, and then log out of the Administrator account.
Log in under your user name you typically use. You now have the ability to create and destroy anything on the PC, so keep that in mind.
Mine worked without a hitch and this is a Vista SP1 PC. Of course, you MUST also run the Update or MagicFix ("you say "either, and I say "Eyether"...).
Vista is a neurotically secure OS. For most average users, this spells trouble, and that is not the user's fault whatsoever. I'm a ten-year Certified Systems Engineer and Vista was a major headache to me as well. Now that I have tamed it, so to speak, it's a lot like NT was. When it's stable, you can't kill it. When it's flaky, you want to kill it.
One more thing: If you are running third-party security apps, like Norton Anti-Virus 08, be aware that the Internet Worm protection will try to block installation of the device. You must allow it explicitly to run if Norton prompts you to decide whether it is allowed or not. Be sure that window is NOT hidden on your screen when you plug your MJ in. Other Anti-Virus apps may pull the same sort of stunt. YMMV.
I hope this helps alleviate some pain.

Re: fix mj vista sp1
Hi freakapotamus,
Thank you for trying to help me isolate whether it is sp1 or something else. I was able to log in as the secret administrator and disable all antivirus, firewalls, even defender and still the mj was unable to be recognized other than a generic hub which leads me to suspect their is something wrong with the device. I do remember back when it stopped working on my other computer the ups battery gave way and wouldn't function, but if that zapped the mj...it was only that device that took a hit and not the telephone.
Unfortunately tech support is awful at mj, and they will not replace the jack or even have one of the "engineers" contact me, so I am out the $70 I invested in December for the mj and the additional year and shipping. Perhaps if one day they have the byod then I can recoup that investment.
Thanks again,
Scott

Hi Scojo. I'm sorry that didn't help you!
Here's a longshot, but is there any chance you have tried to install the MJ update on your Vista PC? I have downloaded it onto my PC in the event something weird happens. The file is UPGRADE.EXE and is 7.29mb, available on the Customer Care portion of the MJ website.
If all else fails and you REALLY want to try this, back up your data and restore your PC. Again, I know it's not a pleasant option but perhaps there's something else afoot with your PC that is causing MJ to be DOA.
Or, if you have a willing friend, try plugging it into that person's PC and, well, see what happens.
Cheers.

Fix for Magic Jack Installation
I have a fix that you may or may not be aware of...
Some CD/DVD ROM's install high/low filters in your registry, for some reason it will prevent Magic Jack from installing; if you go into your registry and delete these entries your installation will go through. at least if you are having the same problem I had.

Fix For Mahicjack Installation
I always have trouble remembering where to reset those anoying upper/lower limit settings. The answer is here at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060.
The registry subkey address is HKEY_LOCAL_MAHCINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. This subkey is for the installed CD/DVD drive, so the Magicjack one might be different.
In the right pane, rightclick UpperFilters and select Delete. Then, again in the right pane, rightclick LowerFilters and select Delete.
I installed my Magicjack on a cheap, Acer laptop running Vista Business with SP1, and the only problem I'm having is the voicemail issues which are abundantly documented in this forum.
Hope this helps you.
