I have 3 computers on my network; two Windows7 machines (one laptop and one desktop) and one WindowsXP. I have the magicjack plugged into my XP machine. My XP machine is setup as a limited user account. It is the only system setup as a limited account.
Every couple of days the WindowsXP machine gets an error 401 and unplugging, replugging, rebooting, removemj and then reinstalling mj software and plugging into a different port. Nothing will fix the 401 error.
So I plug the magic jack into the windows7 machine that is a desktop. It installs the magic jack software and comes up error 401. I plug it into my laptop running windows7 and IT WORKS PERFECTLY. Then I unplug it from my laptop and plug it back into the WindowsXP computer and IT WORKS PERFECTLY for a couple days.
So even though both windows 7 machines are setup running as admin, only the laptop will seemingly "magically heal" the magicjack.
I had the magic jack do it's error 401 again today so I installed a new hard drive and installed a fresh copy of Windows7 on the machine that had XP. I plugged in the magic jack and it downloaded the software and upgraded and then said error 401. This was a fresh Windows7 install and it still comes up error 401.
I plug the magic jack into my laptop and it WORKS. Then I plug it into the new Windows7 install and IT WORKS.
What in the world is going on? My friend said the laptop might be working because it has higher power on the USB port, but why does it work in my PC's after I plug it into the laptop?
Please help, any ideas on what tests I can run. Next time the XP goes error 401 I'm going to go buy a DC powered USB hub and plug it in to the XP machine and see if it fixes the error 401 without having to use the laptop.
Weird error 401 fix/problem.
