I'd like to make sure that, when the software is not visibly running, no marketing sites are being updated with info about my computer use. In other words, is there any evidence that by plugging the MJ device and configuring it you are installing spyware on your computer?
In the Magic Jack TOS, there is this rather vague and ominous provision:
Is the MJ software sending any info about my computer use when the device is not plugged in and the software is not running? Is the TOS only referring to the ads displayed in the softphone? You also understand and agree that use of the magicJack device and Software will include advertisements... Advertisements will be served through the magicPage™ Software. magicPage™ Software attempts to serve local advertisements and classifieds using a completely automated process that enables us to effectively target dynamically changing content. Our computers may analyze the phone numbers you call in order to improve the relevance of the ads.
One way to find out would be to see what web addresses my computer accesses over a day or so. Is there a simple way for me to see this info? I currently use the Symantec Client Firewall, but it doesn't appear to have very good logging features. Any better software for this?
Also, there are a couple of threads describing how to remove the MJ software. The basic process seems to be to plug it in, remove the virtual devices the MJ installs using device manager, remove directories MJ creates, and eliminate some registry keys manually. Was this process described by MJ developers? How do we know it's a complete uninstall?
I know this may not be the right forum to post to, sorry about that. I should say that beyond the lack of an uninstaller, poor caller ID functionality, and a general spyware feel, MJ seems to be a great service. Very decent call quality at an unbelievable price.
Thanks for helping with any of my questions!
