Error 401 with dongle

You could try downloading the update manually from the MJ site and run it. If that doesnt help d/l the MJ removal tool from the MJ site, reboot and then the MJ will update again ( if it doesnt then just run the update file you previously downloaded). it is possible the update got corrupted the first time it installed, it happens.
You may also need to add MJ.exe to your Firewall acceptable files and maybe even as an exemption to your Anti Virus ( which should be disabled when you update MJ, re-enable it again after you are done)

I think I had a similar issue a while back. It ended up that the certificates where not accepted by my system, since I was backdated.
Make sure that you system date is correct.

Just to let you know I'm having the same problem after this last update... nothing seems to fix my 401 error problem...

OK, I just wanted to share...

After the last update I started getting 401 error when opening the MJ software. I tried everything I could... no firewall or antivirus, uninstalled and installed drivers and software, tried upgrade.exe, different computers with different Windows, etc I finally contacted MJ live chat support and they fixed my problem in 5 minutes...

MJ Rep: 1. Click Start tab and open your control panel...

MJ Rep: 2. Go to internet options..

MJ Rep: 3. under privacy tab.. slide bar down to "allow all cookies"

MJ Rep: 4. under security tab click on "trusted sites" then click the "sites" button..

MJ Rep: 5. type the following address into the text box..

MJ Rep: 6. https://reg.talk4free.com click the "add" button..

MJ Rep: 7. type in the following address.. https://my.magicjack.com and click "add".

MJ Rep: 8. type https://data.magicjack.com

MJ Rep: 9. Uncheck the box at bottom left of window that says "require server verification..." click "ok"

MJ Rep: 10. then click "Ok" close the internet options.

MJ Rep: 11. unplug the magic jack and plug it back into a different usb port.

MJ Rep: Please follow the above steps.

Then I used SIPdump and got my new password and username. I noticed also a new string MagicJack/2.0.562d (SJ Labs)

Since the MJ Dongle is NOT OS specific ( XP, Vista AND Win 7 all work)what you said makes no sense. Just ask the MANY Win 7 users on here.. Because if what you say is true, and it is not, all of them now have a useless MJ dongle in their possesion after the update. Uh no.

MAYBE try what the previous user posted..... or what I posted prior to him.

I agree with Joe. I updated to a new machine with Windows 7 about a month ago from XP. I have problems, but not that one.

MJ has a link to a Win7 update on their site:

It tells you to update the CD driver used by MJ.
I also remember seeing an update fix on the MJ site, but I can't locate it right now.
