I do it all the time... No special setup needed. The only thing that might interrupt would be call waiting, but that's really not an issue for me.

IF you are using the dongle the faxing is hit or miss. For some it works for others, not so much.

IF you are using ATA then yes faxing works just fine, that is if you can get ATA working these days since the last update..

I read the attached article a bit ago regarding faxing with VOIP. It gives advice on settings and such.

http://www.voipmechanic.com/faxingissue ... evices.htm

A different article mentioned that faxing over long distances can be problematic because the packets can be routed through different locations and arrive jumbled for whatever that's worth.

I quit faxing about 10 years ago, but if I had to use MagicJack to fax I might limit it to short distant faxes or another method, if it was something really important.

Just my opinion. I'm sure there are users out there that have used MJ to fax everything from A to Z with a great deal of success. I'm not brave enough to trust MJ with anything important.

For you new people....A do-dad forces your phone to display the CID when MJ is being finicy, and won't display it.

Ah yes the 100k ohm resistor trick in a nice neat package..

You would think a do-mom would force it better than a do-dad or at least tell the do-dad to do cid.. whew.. Third base....

MJ & fax machine???

Post by Alma.butterfield »

Is there a way to use an actual fax machine to fax with MJ? I have a friend at church who has a fax machine but can't get it to work with MJ. Any suggestions?

MJ works for some ppl faxing and it also does'nt for alot either. The device ( Fax Machine ) are not all the same either. If the MJ device had T.30 VOIP Fax sending technology it would work great. I have faxed with a MJ using a commerical Canon fax machine but i cheated with software that made the MJ T.30 compatible with external software and a SIP etc. IMO it is not worth it with a MJ because you maybe able to send but not receive or vise versa or there are some it just works fine because the MJ marries to there fax hardware good i guess and some it will not work period.

i think you mean t.38 on the voip fax codec. in the old days when we could use an ata, it worked fine, following settings found here:

http://www.future-nine.com/faq/index.ph ... artlang=en

that is using 711u codec. all you need to do is turn off ecm in the fax machine and set the speed to 9600. however without an ata you would have to get those settings into the softphone application to fax with any relliability. you need a relatively stable internet connection as well
