Question about the Bandwidth

Ok I was not sure where to stick this question so I stuck it here! First of all let me say Kudos to whoever started this Forum! I read so many horror stories about the MJ after I ordered it but now I am not so worried anymore because I know I can get help here. Anyhow I have not received it yet but extremely excited to hopefully receive it shortly .... like tomorrow since I did the express shipping.

So Networking was never my strong side but I know what bandwidth is. I used to have Vonage 2 years ago and was not happy with it after moving to KY so got a land line. Knowing that technology should have evolved throughout the past 2 years I want to give MJ a try and hoping for the best. Since Vonage did not work here very well but did when I live in Texas I believe that maybe my ISP is not the best. I do have cable through "Insight" maybe anyone is from KY and familiar with them. Anywho.....I went to the speakeasy and ran a test to all servers. But they are all different and now I am lost. So I was wondering if someone could just tell me if those are good or bad numbers! Know what I mean? Also if there is a better site where I can test my connection I would appreciate it if you guys shared.

Your speeds are all plenty high. Go to http://www.testyourvoip.com/ and test to Boston. If your score is consistently high, even during the heavy traffic evening hours, you should be quite happy with MJ.

Thanks a bunch for the link. I am a bit over "As good as a decent cell phone call" so I can live with this. This was my main concern that my internet connection may be garbage!

This information from testyourvoip is worthless, right now activity is low and my quality is lower than that. According to that website I should have clarity as if we were standing next to each other!

No, I am not from West Virginia, we have all our teeth and a slight mid west accent.

snssewell, I have Insight at home and at the office. It does work with magicJack. I'm using the Louisville, KY magicJack 502 area code with the 713 prefix on all 3 of my magicJacks. You should love magicJack!

Cool thats good to know that you are so close and using the same isp. Now the darn thing just has to get here so i can start saving them big bucks!

The information from testyourvoip.com is IMO nearly always valid. On occasion, I've seen scores lower than expected, perhaps because the testyourvoip server or its connection to the Internet was overloaded. However, I don't believe that there is any situation where a high score would be reported, even though the actual network path is poor.

That said, there are many reasons why you might have a good score on testyourvoip.com and a poor quality MJ phone call, inlcuding:
1. MJ server is overloaded or malfunctioning.
2. MJ sends the call through a carrier that is having trouble.
3. Your MJ device has a hardware defect.
4. There is a problem with a driver, etc., that affects MJ but not the testyourvoip applet.
5. The problem is with your phone, e.g. your wireless router is interfering with it.
6. The trouble is at the far end, e.g. poor cellular connection, remote party's VoIP service.
7. Conditions changed between test time and call time.

I just tested the bandwidth used by my Magicjack and it was about 80-90 Kbps in and out. Based on your speedtest numbers, you have more than enough speed. However, with any connection speed, you can still have an impact on call quality depending on what you are doing with the rest of your bandwidth. For example, if you are doing large uploads/downloads or running P2P apps, your calls may suffer. You can remedy this if your router supports QOS, which basically allows you to give certain traffic (like your magicjack) higher priority.

My router setup is a custom PC with a software called monowall which has many features with one of them being a bandwidth monitor. I made a call and watched the numbers, which is how I got the results above. The numbers I get are more reliable than typical speed test websites because it measures the actual bandwidth being utilized.

Thanks for the info. I do have a P2P on my PC but barely ever have it up and running The only thing thats always running is my Yahoo Messenger. My only other concern is my Nero and Norton Internet Security. As I read those could cause problems with the MJ as well. But I guess I will deal with that problem when the MJ gets here (still not here buhuuuu, but of course it is Sunday today and the mail doesn't run lol).

Also, the route your Internet takes to the phone drop will have a major impact on call quality. That's why I suggest (if you don't have a local number) doing several speed tests using a site like speakeasy.net/speedtest to find out where you get the smoothest Internet traffic then going with that location. Otherwise, your traffic has to bump and snake its way across the Internet and gets into all sorts of trouble along the way.
