Conflict with other USB Devices? Fixed

Post by orlandoclay »

Final Edit:

I figured it out and feel like a complete idiot... After XP3 install, I reinstalled TweakUI Powertoy to use it to tweak settings and eliminate login screen and apparently limited myself to the drives that were showing at the time (through G:)... I checked the drives and they now show with no issue. doh! I hate pulling out hair I can't afford to lose.

End Edit.

I have been tweaking MJ for a couple of weeks now and have a pretty consistent clean connection. The problem I am running into is that when I put another USB device on the computer it doesn't show up in explorer as a drive like it used to.

For instance, my digital camera doesn't show in explorer, yet if I go into my photo software, I can transfer files. So the camera is being seen by XP, but not assigned a visible letter.

This is a weak workaround though as there are times I need to see the device as it is designed.

I also recently updated to XP3 (I have XP Pro), but can't point definitively to either the MJ or the update as the culprit. I suspect MJ because it definitely appears to mess with drive lettering, taking 2 for itself and if I use software that scans available drives such as DVDFab, it causes errors in the software.

I have unplugged the MJ and rebooted to the same effect.

Is this a known issue? I couldn't come up with a good search term that didn't turn up 400 plus hits here.

Edit: I have a cludgy work around.

I checked in device manager and it is showing up there and I used Acronis Disk Director and lo and behold it shows an H: drive. I manually put H:\ in explorer and it finally showed up and was accessible. When I closed explorer and opened it again, the device was gone again.

FYI, F5 doesn't work and I have had MJ unplugged and computer rebooted while experimenting. MJ still has a hold on F: and G: as if it is still plugged in as evidenced by the device that doesn't show in explorer being assigned H:\ and devices beyond G: don't appear in explorer. I can't recall tweaking anything that told XP not to display all drive letters.

End Edit:

Thanks in advance for your assistance.
