Worked-now not working. HELP!

Hi all. I got my mj about 2 months ago. I have an Inspiron 1705 with Media Direct, running XP Media Center 2002, Service pack 2. Should work like a charm, right? Somebody please help or I'm getting out my gun....

Story goes: Get the mj, boot it up, works fine. Run it for about two weeks, then switch it to a slower laptop (inspiron 9400) to use as the "dummy" machine for the mj. MJ stopped working, won't load, just get the splash screen that says "You must plug Magicjack into a USB port". Was running windows 2000 os, and mj support told me it was incompatible. Upgraded to XP Pro. No change, mj still won't run, same message.

So, I gave up for a month, and then decided to just run my main laptop with the mj all the time. Now mj won't work on THIS pc either! Same message about must plug into usb port. MJ worked fine before, now nothing. I've downloaded the magic fix so may times I could scream. Have been online with tech support 6 times in the last week for hours. Same fixes, same result. Nothing.

Anyone out there offer some insight to this situation? I love the mj what little time I've had with it, but I'm going crazy now.....

Okay, I know this sounds like it won't fix your problem, but seriously, I so wanted my MJ to work, and no matter how many fixes I made, or how many hours I spent online with Tech spt, nothing seemed to make a difference. Mine also worked just fine initially, and then nothing! I was plugging my MJ into a USB hub that separately plugged into an AC outlet (as suggested), and still nothing. It looked like MJ would start to load, bog down everything and then would eventually tell me I needed to have my MJ plugged in. ???? I eventually realized that I was using an older USB hub, hence a slower connection. I went out, purchased a $20 usb hub with an ac adapter/connection, plugged it into the computer and an a/c outlet, plugged in MJ to a USB port on the hub, and whoooosh..... MJ has worked mostly without incident for the past few months! That's the only fix that worked for me. The tech kept asking if I was using a usb port with an separate ac connection, and I kept saying yes, as I was. lol Computer stores would tell me that because of my usb ports, I shouldn't need an extra ac connection, cause they're already powered. Well, I guess it wasn't powered enough. The newer usb hubs are made for the faster speeds, and again, this was the only thing that worked for my problem. Good luck!

AC powered USB hub help a lot on magicjack. However, this fix could help a lot too.

1Please unplug your magicJack. Now go to "Start" in Windows and click on "run".
2In there write regedit and press enter.
3Now click on + sign next to HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE.
4Click on + sign next to SYSTEM
5Click on + sign next to CurrentControlSet
6Click on + sign next to Enum
7Now find folder called USB. Right click on that and click on "Permissions". In permissions click on the check mark called "Allow" to the right of "Full Control".
8Click Ok.
9Now click on + sign next to USB and then find the folders called "Vid's---", right click on one at a time and select delete.
10Now click on - Sign next to USB.
11Right click on Folder called USBSTOR and allow permissions.
12Now click on + sign next to USBSTOR.
13Find the folders called "CdRom&Ven_YMAX&Prod_MagicJack&Rev" and "Disk&Ven_YMAX&Prod_MagicJack&Rev"
14Right click on those one at a time and delete them.
15Now exit Regedit and then plug your magicJack using the extension cord

That wouldn't do anything really. What he's recommending is going into the registry and manually deleting the entries for the MJ device. This is occasionally useful with USB devices, because if a value gets set incorrectly when the device is installed, there's no direct way to fix it. Uninstalling the device from the Device Manger doesn't really mean "uninstall", because Windows will keep some of those entries anyway, just in case you might change your mind. So, the only way to purge those residual entries is to the delete them manually. Of course, Windows doesn't like that, so the permissions for those are removed by default.

@kayatanon - Thanks for the procedure to reset mJ reg entries. I'm not terribly brave at changing/deleting registry entries (though I'm never scared to look). Very useful info!

That procedure -did- change behavior of my crappy-Jack. Now I get the following:
"magicJack was unable to contact our registration server. Please check your internet connection. If you can browse other web pages <I can...>, it means our server is temporarily down. Please restart the phone again in a few minutes if it is not ready to call. We apologize for any inconvenience."

Is there no redundancy in this system? Did they ALL go down?

Prior to your proc, I was getting a loop of 'Please connect to the Internet and double-click here', which would pull up Registration window, asking me to verify email and password, which would restart the softphone, which would prompt me to 'Please connect...' Blah, blah, blah.

Someone -please- tell me Dan isn't scratching his head while whizzing into the servers?!??? (grin)

Surely, he doesn't have those 'tech-chat' morons working out network issues... I agree with other's comments that they probably don't know a thing about mJ, YMAX, or even VoIP. I won't be wasting more time in tech-chat - it's useless and pointless. They've never followed up on two 'escalated' issues from my first week of the 'trial'.

Does Dan not realize the total cost of having morons providing 'tech-chat' for support? Besides the financial cost of hiring them, there's the added cost of bad customer relations and poor market acceptance. I've got about ten friends pi$$ed as hell at me since I steered them into this... I keep getting emails asking 'How do I call tech support?'

Does anyone know if there's -any- technically aware, telecom experienced and VoIP knowledgeable person working on all these issues? I am certain that, if given a chance, I could find a way to fix -ALL- the problems. Might take a few days (weeks?), but it could be fixed. And stay fixed! Why doesn't Dan hire someone who knows this stuff???

This is SOOOOoooo damned frustrating! I've been thinking I should have just sent the damn thing back. But then again... it has worked somewhat over the last two months. I've probably had a total of two days worth of 'working properly'. Lost count of the dropped calls, the clicks, buzzes, screeches, etc. Still, $1.33/mo isn't a lot to pay for phone service.

Of course, if this weren't my only phone connection, it wouldn't be nearly so frustrating. That isn't Dan's fault (or problem). Still, it should just work - it's only technology. (smile)

I saw in an earlier post that ATAs are outlawed? But coming later?

What happened to the Linux project? Any news on that?

I guess maybe Dan's concentrating on making the intial config under XP work before tackling Linux or ATA support (locking?). I'd take Linux (anything to get away from M$!), but I'd -really- prefer to use my ATA - which I bought specifically for using w/mJ.

Enough rant... Maybe I'll try that powered USB hub trick when the servers come back to life.
