Can MJ be plugged into a router instead of a PC?

Post by Zen »

Hi everyone. I like to know if MJ can be plugged into a router instead of plugging it into a PC or Laptop USB? If so, which router can be used for this purpose?
I like to be able to use my MJ without haveing my computer running.

All feedback will be appreciated.

It has to be plugged into a machine running XP or Vista.

The only way you can use MJ without a PC is to get an ATA (analog telephone adapter) or a SIP phone. Some say that accounts have been canceled for getting caught using them though.

Thanks for the info. I have heard that there are certain routers that MJ can be directly plugged into. If that is the case using a computer with MJ will not be necessary. I think these are mobile routers?

Sorry, but the magicjack box itself requires a USB host port, drivers and software to work, which you are not going to find on any router. Besides, the only "mobile" routers I've heard of use cellular boardband, which are not only expensive and require a data plan with a cell provider, but I doubt that they have the upstream bandwidth to work with MJ anyway.

Here is the info I found on MJ's site.

Q: Will magicJack work with wireless broadband?
A: Yes. magicJack works with wireless broadband such as EVDO and HSDPA.

Yes those are the expensive data plans referred to upthread for connecting a PC to the internet.

OK, so I was wrong about the speed, but I still don't see the point of subscribing to a $50+ cell data service to use a cheap VOIP service when a cheap cell phone with a regular calling plain would certainty be better and cheaper anyway.

Why in the world would you get caught using an ATA? There is absolutely no way they can know this.

well since it is diffrent hardware used Iwould say it is pretty easy to determine if your using an ATA or MJ device.. Look at the diffrence in sip requests between the two.
