I have a couple of stupid questions

First question.
What is all the talk about spoofing? I have done a lot of reading but just don't understand what, or why you are spoofing.

I told you they are stupid questions.

Second question.
I see people talking about using an ATA. What is that and why would a person use it?

I love my MJ the way it works right out of the box. The only thing that can make it better is when I have a local number available. Other than that, I don't see too many ways to improve it. This thing is great. I just ordered my second one yesterday.

These are good questions for a novice at telephony. There are lots of us.
Spoofing is just fooling the call receiver into thinking you are calling from another number, usually your real home number. This prevents your calls from being screened out as telemarketers.
An ATA enables a VOIP phone to connect through broadband to the internet without requiring a computer.

Stupid questions can raise thought for food.

The nuts and bolts of spoofing would actually lend to understanding of how internet telephony works. Spoofing in and of itself is an extra-credit course.

kcowan, thank you for your USEFULL answers. One more question about the ATA though, is it possible to use this with the MJ? Or, does the MJ require a pc and operating system to run?

MJ is designed to work with a PC. Some have devised a method to use an ATA but that seems to violate MJ's Terms of Service and most likley more trouble than it's worth.

And I must say, having taught for years, someone who asks "stupid questions" is more than likely willing to learn something new rather than one who sits in the back of the classroom and makes jokes of someone asking questions while not able to devise a question of their own.

I will probably stay away from the ATA but will look into the thin client.
I love the way mine works right out of the box but it would be nice to get it off my home pc and on a pc of its own.

I've read it before but forget where. What is MJ's broadband range, from the lowest to highest?

The MJ web site says you should have at least 80kb of bandwidth for MJ to work. The more the better. Basicly, any cable, DSL, T1 should work. Satellite will not.
